really the only time i have to change my habits with the clutch is using AC versus no AC. With the 2.4l i notice I have to ride the clutch a bit more when the AC is on. ( or the rpms "bounce" when going into gears). Traffic, hills, all those other incident are just fun to me. Leave it in first and engine break, in between N and 1st. everyone's diff tho, but i enjoy it

I've only owned manuals for the last 10 years, although I've never had to commute daily (thanks to working from home, bikes, and public transit), but have driven in plenty of city traffic. I haven't totally stopped thinking about shifting, but I don't feel like it's a burden. It's just another part of operating the vehicle... like signaling turns. Maybe that's a bad analogy, since turn signal use seems to be , but I digress...

In traffic, I play the "second gear game". I try to space myself from the car in front of me so I can stay in second gear as much as possible, even as cars in front of my drive stop-and-go. Sometimes it works. Sometimes drivers around me can't leave a gap alone and cut me off. Whatever.

I currently have my '98 Tacoma and an '05 Civic. The Civic is much more pleasant to drive, all-around. The engine, clutch, and transmission are all smoother. Something about the balance of power, gearing, and weight is better--it doesn't require as much downshifting to pass or climb steep grades. If your previous clutch experience is in trucks (or performance-oriented cars), you might be pleasantly surprised by how different a boring ol' sedan feels.

    Was tired AF

    Been out of town Thur/Fri.

Met a lot of Steph's family as they had a going away; one of her cousins/family left for Texas so we had a huge get together. Many a beer and burger was consumed.

    @Speedytech7

Are you aware of a different fan clutch or replacement fan blade options for 3G4R/1st Gen Tacoma's?

I've yet to replace the thermostat with the one you sent me, but I'm guessing the jiggle valve may be at the 12 o'clock as my co-worker can't remember.

    1. Ever since I drained and filled my coolant (which still looked brand new) and finding out my OEM radiator had less than 50k or so miles, I've been running slightly cooler temperatures. I assume some air may have gotten into the system and I helped relieve it of that air.

On 110 degree weather in Fresno (like yesterday), I run an average 204 on the highway up and down some hills. If I turn off O/D, I'm running 192-194 even in the hot ass weather going uphill even.

At a stop, after driving a good hour or two, while sitting at a light my temps will peg up to 213-215 and once I start moving it'll drop again. I could sit at the light for awhile and it won't go higher than that.

If I park for awhile and leave the vehicle running, my temps will drop down to about 204 IE arriving at a store or something.

This tells me my system is running fine, and the fan is more than adequate enough to cool everything down.

    2. Everywhere I read, specifically about 3G4R's, says normal operating temperatures are 176-203 via FSM.

    3. Many threads on 4R.org as well as other forums, state they see an average of 195-220.

    4. Having owned a 1st Gen Tacoma, has me stuck on their lower operating temps so I'm still having a hard time swallowing this pill.

My assumption is that by utilizing my aux transmission cooler, I'll be removing some heat from the radiator which will bring down temps.

My other assumption is that the jiggle valve in the current thermostat is in the wrong position, and that once I put the new in one, it'll help a bit.

Tell me I'm crazy and I'm just chasing temps when really I have no issue as many are reporting even higher temperatures on their 4Runner.

I don't like to exceed 205° on old Toyotas. There is a different fan clutch, there's a green and an orange. One is for the tow package and moves more air even at idle. It might steal more HP too. Aisin fan clutches can be taken apart and filled with different weight synthetic oils to change when and how much they engage. I'd make sure your jiggle valve is on point first, also check the P/N for the thermo I sent you, it might be a 170° stat for SC application, which will work fine too.

Ok, so I am correct in thinking there's another fan clutch.

Now I want to go back and figure out what clutch I replaced it with; most likely the regular non-tow one.

As for the thermostat, it's 82° C which would be 180° (factory).

    I found what I purchased - Aisin FCT-013

Shows from multiple vendors as the factory replacement fan clutch.

Will dig around to find the other variant otherwise I'll work on the current one myself with a different oil.

    Makes sense.

I'll dig into it, but nice knowing one exists.

I just need to have days off now to remove my thermostat at home; like @Das it mang I dread working on my 4Runner at my apartment.

House has been delayed by 2 weeks already, while first wave has framing up. :frusty:
