When to schedule my first maintenance?

Bought my ‘21 DCLB a few weeks ago and am pushing 1500miles.. I have read conflicting things in regards to first maintenance. Do I wait to hit 4-5k or should I take it in earlier? Thoughts/ opinions welcome . TAI.

 

Every 5k. As the maintenance manual suggests.

 

Check that little book in glove box for the correct opinion lol. 5K general, 10K oil changes are what the book says. Many here over 200K following those rules.

 

Toyota automatically sent me an email for the place date, and time when my 1st, and 2nd maintenance was due. Recently i had to call the dealer to set a date and time for my 3rd one after toyota notified me by email last month it was time again to schedule it.

 

I bought my 2021 in November 2020. I have 1900 miles now and have not taken it in. So no rush. I should be bringing in mine around 2023.

 

I have read the manual. But a lot on here have done it sooner. which is why I have questions.

10k for the first oil change. 5k for the first maintenance

 

The first maintenance is 5k. Then at 10k or 6 mos is the first oil and filter change etc.

 

Well I’m an idiot, I should have said oil change/maintenance.
I’m just really wanting this to be my truck for 10-15 years And if there is any “shavings” I want that shiz gone.

 

You'll lose your free services and oil changes after the 2nd year if you don't use them.

 

If I don’t need anything,no reason to go. I may do the oil change soon just due to time. The longest it has driven was maybe 15 miles. It is a second car, sits most of the time. I drive it for fun.

 

Your oil filter will catch any of that stuff. I did my first oil change myself at 5K Miles and the filter didn't look that bad. Most Toyota dealers don't change the oil & filter until 10K Miles and those trucks still last a very long time. Oil and oil filters are a lot better than they used to be.

 

Check your owner manual and follow their instructions. But full disclosure, this is coming from someone who's truck has yet to see the stealer for service after over five years, so there's that...

follow the manual unless U have extreme extenuating circumstances

 

Just follow the Owner's Manual for Service Intervals............

It's not open heart surgery.

plenty of the truly small micron shiz is suspended in the oil

unless U have a 2-5 micron filter...........U NEVER get it ALL Out

no less alum & steel settle out of the oil in the sump

lots of it just sits there

draining gets most of it out

 

According to a buddy who used to sell cars, the long time frame or distance recommended oil change interval based on "normal" driving is mostly for "low cost of maintenance" marketing promotion.

Here is the catch: if you commute in traffic, drive in the city, or take short trips, you fall in the "severe use" category and therefore require more frequent oil changes. So low cost of maintenance applies if you only drive long distances on the highway.

I just had my local Toyota dealer do an oil change and the small window sticker that they applied says next oil change in 6 months or 6k kms. My Taco is not my only vehicle and is low kms, so next oil change will likely be in a year's time.

 

As others said the first Toyota care service that includes an oil change is 10,000 miles. Mine was just done this morning at Bill Kidd's. The 5k service is just rotation of the tires and check of fluids and stuff. I did do my own oil change just before 5,000 miles. Like you I want my truck to last and never had a brand new vehicle before. I heard all this stuff about metal shavings and grit form manufacturing in engines when new. Don't know if it's still true these days but oil isnt that expensive and I like doing my own maintenance.

They are tracking you so don’t worry they will let you know when it’s time to bring your truck in.
