so what is ‘ a loyal customer ‘

    the dealer the middle man....................

toyota corporate is not loose with the purse strings

the dealer hates being on the hook for something they did not do

many acustomer feels entitled a direct result they paid a lot ( if not tooooo much )

corporate already knows where there are issues as many dealers are reporting to them

the dealer not at fault..............they didnt build the vehicle

if corporate doesnt deem it so the dealer can only do so much

or most anybody ALL the time will take them to the bank................cant stay in business like that

    Totally,

My favorite is “ Don’t take this the wrong way ...” usually followed by something negative like that dress looks ugly on you. How you supposed to take it. DUH.

    Or

“I hope you understand why“ followed by we denied your warranty claim when they give a rats ass and want to get rid of you.

An Oil cooler isn’t like headlights or spark plugs or brake pads, it’s not a wear item. It should be covered under engine power train warranty.

It is in the part name, ENGINE. Can it be any more clear. An engine is a power train.

then a radiator heater core should be drive train also

drive train typically are the components that are directing motivating the vehicle

not those parts goin along for the ride

    typically motor

    trans

    rear end

gets more complicated with transfer cases

    half shafts

ToYoda4x4, I am nearly 100% that my truck does not have a tow package. I don't tow anything and never intended to tow anything when I bought my truck. I'll check my original sales paperwork tomorrow. If it has a tow package, I didn't pay for it. The oil cooler assembly part number is T-15710-OP020 @$779.00 if that helps. I see the technician calls it "a 16805 oil cooler that was blown" if that means anything.

Beginning in 2018, ALL V6 equipped Tacomas came standard with the tow package. Here's a brochure for 2018 that states a tow package is standard on all V6's: https://cdn.dealereprocess.org/cdn/brochures/toyota/2018-tacoma.pdf (Brochure is attached as a PDF see page 6 for tow package information). I don't believe 2017 and older V6's without the tow package nor any 4 cylinder Tacomas came with an oil cooler but I could be wrong.

The reason I feel this is relevant is because if I were in your shoes I would politely make the case to Toyota that the engine oil cooler assembly is part of the powertrain and the reason it might be omitted from the list of covered powertrain components in the warranty manual is because not all Tacomas are equipped with one. Again, the emphasis being that the oil cooler is a lubricated part directly attached to the engine block, is an integral component of the engine, and came standard on your engine. It'll still be at Toyota's discretion and you will still need to have a representative sympathetic to your situation but that's just my opinion on how I would approach the conversation if they were to deny the claim. In my opinion being polite and presenting your case with facts and a possible explanation as to why it's not listed along with some corporate goodwill in your favor due to the low mileage of the engine and your brand loyalty is better than other methods such as a thinly veiled threat of negative PR by saying “thousands of Tacoma owners and potential future buyers on Tacomaworld forum await their reply”. That may work or it may not but I don't think I could say that with a straight face. Hopefully none of what I'm saying matters and Toyota comes back in a week and says they'll reimburse you for all repairs without any more work on your part. Again, good luck and I hope it works out for you.

At this point the issue has been punched over to specialists and engineers, the three repeats of the story were to check for inconsistencies and people that understand the wording of the warranty and the workings of a Tacoma are doing research to make a decision

ToYoda4x4, thank you for the link. I did check my new truck window sticker (paper) and, voila it has the tow package listed as standard equipment. I didn't know that, but what, if any leverage that might do for me---I don't know.
Original sales brochure lists the V6 tow package under the Drivetrain heading. My dealer provided "New Toyota Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty" states "that the components covered will be the same as the Factory 5 year/60,000 mile Powertrain warranty with the exception of items listed herin as not covered...". This failed oil cooler is not listed as a covered part, yet it is not listed as a "Not Covered Under Warranty" part. Confusing to say the least.

That the corporate office is mulling it over is a good sign. Saying "no" is instant, saying "yes" to covering it takes some "mulling it over" first.

Well, Toyota was supposed to call us last week with their decision. No one has called yet. Last week I scheduled a routine maintenance looksy at the actual dealership where I purchased the truck. In talking to the head service manager, he said if we could have had the truck repaired in his shop, he would have made a call to the district Toyota warranty rep and the repair most likely would have been covered under warranty. There is some hope. We'll see if Toyota calls back this coming week.

Good luck, OP. Anxiously watching in hopes that they stand by their product for you and make it right. Reading your account of events reminds me of how it felt to deal with my homeowners insurance regarding removing a tree from my roof after a storm knocked it over. Not fun at all.

Toyota use to be good about issues that were past the warranty period. Not so any more. Really depends if the dealer wants to go the extra mile. When i complained about the head unit on my prius where the gps failed, they told me they can no longer give the store away. In other words they were telling me politely i was sol.

The bottom line is you're out of warranty and the part isn't covered in the 5/60 . Sometimes in situations like this they help but it is at their discretion . I called about a problem with my last truck that was out of warranty and the woman on the phone asked what do you want me to do about it you are out of warranty .

Sad that Toyota won't cover an obviously defective part but if the customer had kept driving it and smoked the engine, it would have been covered and Toyota would have been on the hook for many thousands of dollars more.

It also makes one wonder why the heck would anyone bother buying an extended warranty thru Toyota if it's pretty much useless for things like this.

Thanks for the update OP. That sucks! Your local dealer is where you do all the business? Maybe he would arrange a meeting with the regional rep when they are in town? Only after you hear from corporate of course and just for informational purposes for part failure clarification. There is a lot of 2018s on the road maybe they will bite? When I had a paint issue my local dealer let me talk to the regional rep when he was in town. Just idea since they were certain they would have submitted the paperwork if the truck was brought there and all.....
Another reason I bought AAA with extended tow coverage. It has saved my behind a time or two (not with my 2013) thankfully.
Good luck let us know post up some pics of that darn part please if you can.

Toyota does not cover anything electronic past the 3 year 36k mile warranty, and thats a big problem nowadays if you don't have their extended warranty.

Here's an update for those of you interested in following this thread.

Toyota was supposed to call us back the week of August 2--6. By Friday (6th) no call had come. We'll wait until next Monday, I guess. Monday comes and goes. So on Tuesday (10th) I called my Toyota person (actually called a "Brand Engagement Advocate"---really) to see about the status of my case. He said he hadn't been able to get the repair paperwork from the dealership that did the initial inspection and subsequent repair. I basically said how tough can that be to get a fax of the repair receipt in this day and age? It's been nearly 2 weeks since they've had my file. We offered to take a phone picture and send a text copy of the repair invoice to my "Brand Engagement Advocate" since apparently he couldn't get a copy himself. But wait----my "Brand Engagement Advocate" person said he'd call for the repair invoice (again) if we could just hang around the phone for a 1/2 hour or so. He'll get back to us. Guess what? No call back that Tuesday or even Wednesday (11th). We called Toyota late today. Our "Brand Engagement Advocate" was busy so we were put in contact with "Brand Engagement Advocate" #2. While talking to BEA #2, our original BEA #1 had left a message telling us he finally had received an invoice copy so now "the management team" could meet soon to decide if our case has any merit for warranty consideration. At the end of the phone conversation, Toyota comes on to see if we'd be interested in taking a customer satisfaction survey. By all means I would. So, we'll see where this all leads to now. Luckily, I can absorb the $4,000 I'm out for a failed Toyota part. It never was about money. It's really about Toyota doing the right thing with a long-time customer (they call it being in the "Toyota Family"). To be continued.....
