Ok so what is below that section? Vinyl is very sensitive to heat and cold. From what ive seen. So maybe something warmer there causing that section to swell. Since its vinyl and no wood correct?

Tough to know without taking up the floor, but is the subfloor arching as well? You say it's floating but is there a chance some genius used liquid nails or something similar to adhere some spots that wouldn't sit flat on their own?

Today I spent a few hours draining my leaking water heater & chiseling out the petrified plastic drain to replace it with a nice brass full port ball valve spigot. Combined with a 3/4" garden hose the new setup rivals some smaller fire hydrants I've seen.

Oh, and the sofa I ordered on April 6th finally arrived. For reference my friend is about 6'1" & the chair swallows him (all 130 lbs).

Only thing below is the plywood subfloor, floor joists, and crawl space. No pipe, no duct, no anything. It is vinyl, not wood.

Subfloor isn’t arching. It’s literally like an air pocket below the vinyl plank. About 1” at its highest point. You walk on it and sink down and can see and feel the floor move, but it always raises back up. It’s floating. I liquid nails or anything. They installed it so we know every detail to it.

I installed vinyl plank in my house as well and have not seen this. It’s just wild..

Was there a backer or padding put down before the lap that could be at fault?

Is there dampproofing done in the crawlspace? Did they use a moisture barrier underlayment before the plank went down? Was the subfloor nice and flat?

That “waterproof” vinyl plank is anything but. If you’re certain expansion room isn’t the culprit then floor flatness or moisture are the only other two variables. I deal with with this stuff constantly in my line of work.

Nope. Just the underlayment connected to the vinyl plank itself.

The vinyl has the underlayment layer attached to itself, or so advertised. I don’t believe they have any damp proofing in the crawl space, but not sure. It’s cool down there, but not damp. I’m no expert on that stuff. Why would that be affecting just this one specific spot like that? And how is it reversed/prevented?

Moisture is a weird and unpredictable thing in flooring. You could have one little spot with issue, or the entire floor, it really all depends. Usually when the floor starts going upward, it’s trying to expand and has nowhere to go but up. It’s possible it is gaining moisture in and around that spot and those planks are swelling. I’d also see how that quarter round is installed. If the nails were installed into the floor and not into the baseboard, that expansion gap isn’t doing what it’s supposed to anymore.

It also could be that the subfloor has a little dip there and walking on it has broken the click mechanism in those planks, that will make them bow a bit as well.

The nails are into the baseboard only, and that is “above” the flooring. The gap should definitely be doing what it’s supposed to.

to the best of my knowledge there is no subfloor issues, but maybe something slight. I know this is a big enough bump/air pocket/etc that it seems like it would be something much more drastic

Might be time to do a little destructive testing and see what’s going on in that spot. Popping up those planks might just answer all the questions!

Yeah they were trying to avoid that haha.

do you think a dehumidifier in the room or maybe in the crawl space would possibly help? Just to see if it makes it go down or go away

We are getting settled into the new house and we've run into something that is all my fault and we should have thought of. Our house has all gas appliances. Gas stove, gas hot water heater, gas furnace. But somehow the dryer connection is electric. I guess when we were looking around I took it for granted that there would be a gas connection in the laundry room.

Fortunately the hot water heater is in the garage on the other side of the wall, so we had a plumber come by and give an estimate to run the line. I want to avoid tearing into the wall so I asked him to run the line up and then along the ceiling, then penetrate the wall into the laundry room and come down. All told it's less than 30 feet and his quote was pretty reasonable - $1100 - so we are going to get it done.

Our only issue is that he needs to check with the city and make sure they'll give a permit to do the job like I want. He tried calling them Friday but didn't get ahold of them so we're trying again Monday. I don't think there's anything in code that would prevent it but he wants to be sure before he'll start the job so we're on a clothesline for the time being.

Now for the question - Should I go forward with this or return the gas dryer to Lowe's and try to get an electric dryer? Please keep in mind that getting appliances right now is challenging...we weren't sure we'd be able to get a dryer at all based on the stock and availability in town so I'm kind of hesitant to send this one back and start over again.

    Thanks for your time, folks!

Gas appliances seem to be less to operate than electric. Better for cooking IMO, sometimes both are put in at time of building. That’s more of a modern day building spec. I would do the gas in your situation.

Thanks for your advice. I'm actually surprised they didn't put both gas and electric because the house was built in 2017. When I asked the plumber about it, he said that the builder probably did it this way to save money. Way cheaper to run cable than piping.

Is there really a difference in water softener salt? Some claim iron removal and such.

At first the resin beads added a nasty phenol taste. After 4 days my resin is still seems to be adding a slight phenol (think bandaids) taste. Is this normal? Hopefully tomorrow all gone.

We ran potassium chloride in our water softener and it worked really well. I could taste the difference between it and the regular salt
