Basically all models are fine if 4x4 and you use since and know how to drive off road. Years ago they didn’t have all the trims and options and everyone did fine with just plain 4 wheel drive. Go with the trim you like best and you’ll be okay with either one off road.

    As a Capable off-roading rig?

    What does the "Sport" have?
    -Limited slip

    What does the OR have?
-Crawl Control. (NOT on a Manual)
    -Locker

If wheeling is the Main concern? Between the 2; there really is no question to which has an advantage. (Given the exact same price point!)

I'm only addressing what is specifically intended to aide in wheeling and are the differenences between the 2, in regards to Wheeling! (NOT LOOKS!)

Not commenting in any way on personal skill level, or intent of use/need for the purchase.

I don't really see the point of the sport when the OR exists, especially if they're at the same price point (which they typically are). Better to have it and not need it (locking diff) than to need it and not have it.

What about people who have no interest in off-roading and trucks spends 99.9٪ of its life on pavements/highway. 4x4 for the small chance of small patches of dirt it may see?

I would be inclined to think street tuned suspension is more desirable for which the trucks spends majority of its life at.

But I could be wrong, since lockers and suspension change/want is high probability that owners do anyways for the occasional dirt tails.

A lot of people live in areas where they get significant snow fall and require 4WD to get around.

I originally wanted a sport 4x back in 2019 when i first got into tacomas, they have painted fenders, cool rims and a cool FAKE hood scoop. then i realized the value is in the Off-Road and especially here when dealers were marking up the trd sport trim the Offroad was the obvious choice.

I’ve had my sport way back in woods for winter hunting trips. Some really slick rock spots. Truck did great overall. Just need to go slow and know how to maneuver and turn off some of the traction control stuff when needed.

All this reliance on lockers and crawl control is entertaining. Jeep originally had open diffs front and rear. Guys did Rubicon in them.

My first Rubicon trip I had an open front and factory 3.73 limited slip rear. For those doing the math early Jeeps could be no wheel drive and my CJ one wheel drive.

I’m not saying locker like my ARB’s don’t make a huge difference, as do the 4.88’s. But you can go a long way in in a stock vehicle. Heck a good driver can go places in a 2x4 an incompetent one can’t in a dedicated machine.

yeah but 4wd and lockers are like insurance. I usually prefer driving in 2wd offroad as much as i can because i hate the feeling of binding on turns even on loose dirt

In stock form it's more capable than 95% of drivers. Driver is primary, truck is secondary.

I did not buy my TRD Sport for off road adventure and torture lol. I basically got it 4x4 for Winter and when I do go up to the hunting camp which is a muddy road but flat. Other than that it is just a nice looking truck I get told all the time.

Just gotta make this clear since people still think it’s the way. LSD does not exist on the 3rd gen, that was a 2nd gen TRD sport feature, 3rd gens you’re getting a hood scoop, that’s about it.
