Yikes! I always worry about something like that when I'm on my bike!

I agree, it could have been way worse and I'm very thankful that it wasn't! Normally when I travel, my truck would is loaded a lot heavier. TBH I didn't need anything other than the tire-changing tools which came with my Taco (aside from the gloves and an old T-shirt I carry). Although the spare was 10 LBS low so I used my portable air compressor to top it off before I pulled back out into traffic.

Many moons ago I worked in a service station and we fixed a lot of tires. We would pull all kinds of stuff out of tires, nails, screws, keys, wrenches, odd pieces of metal, etc. The worst was glass as oftentimes you had to fish around to get all the glass out of the rubber before you could patch the tire.

WOW! Is it really that bad in CA you have to lock your wheel up in the bed? I still leave my keys in the truck.

Weirdest things I found in tires were a fork, a butter knife, a small piece of rebar which cracked the wheel.
    Different tires of course.

The physics of how a bolt/pliers/etc punctures a sidewall while driving forward is amusing.

I just imagine some asshole on the side of the road knife-throwing objects at people's wheels while they drive by.

There isn't a tire made that will fit your Tacoma that would have survived that.

Earlier, I posted the oddest and worst thing I had ever seen. Prior to that, I had a friend who was a service person at an old style service station (you know, pump the gas, change/patch a tire, replace a bulb, lube/oil change). The weirdest thing he showed me was an entire ring of keys sticking out of the sidewall of a tire. It made their wall of prizes. They also had “collateral” people would leave when they couldn’t pay for their gas. They would just put price tags with the amount and a date… got some good tools that way.

This brings back off-topic memories. In the late 80s I was on my sport bike on the freeway behind an early 70s full size station wagon. The entire exhaust assembly came off from behind the header back to the tip. This long thing started bouncing on the freeway in front of me. By the time I got to it the angle was almost perpendicular, was on the bottom of a bounce, and I hit it in the middle. Barely felt it, but was quite scary. I pulled over to push my reset button.

This brings up a question I had when I bought my truck and immediately replaced the tires: should I also replace the spare so it matches? Wondering how many also replace their spares so all five tires are the same (I didn't...)

I went to a slightly larger size and got the same size spare to match.

My wife has had nails in two of her Prius tires within 3 months (2 separate incidents). One was patchable, one required a new tire. I've been lucky so far, nothing on the Taco. Not sure where she is picking up these nails.

I'm on a road trip and staying for the weekend at a Hotel in an open parking lot. I didn't want to bother with storing the bad tire under the bed, to just have to pull it out again the next day to have the tire replaced. Oh and it was 110F here so there's that :bananadead:

That might not be a deal breaker if the spare tire is still the same circumference of the tires, which it probably is.

As long as it's the same size I wouldn't bother. The only time I've replaced the spare tire on my trucks (other than a time 20+ years ago when one got stolen) is when I've gone up on a tire size. Differentials like to have tires of matching diameter on them.

As far as tread design on a spare tire goes, it's a non-issue for me. Two of my trucks have spare tires I bought from used tire stores. When I use a spare tire I generally drive less than 100 miles before I get the damaged tire repaired or replaced.
