Is your transmission downshifting rough?

So lately, when Ive been slowing down, my tranny seems to be shifting harder than usual. By that, I mean the truck feels like its knocking. Its not happening regularly. In fact, it seems to happen simultaneously when I accelerate after I had to break...almost as if the truck didnt know to shift or not. Just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same thing. Grant it, I have almost 64k miles. So much for the powertrain warranty (as far as having it checked for free). Let me know guys.

 

sounds like you need to have your fluid checked. on the 06 i had, it was shifting weird, and when the dealership finally checkedit....it was a quart low from the factory. hope this helps!

 

I was going to post about the same thing! When I'm slowing down it feels like the truck is jake-braking by itself. It's rough moving through the motions. I know I need to go in and have the tranny fluid checked, but I'm not looking forward to the battle I'll have with them to do it (since they have to drain & refill).

Sorry I'm not of more help. I'm going to be keeping my eye on this thread, though.

 

they dont have to drain/refill just to check the fluid bro. they get it to operating temp, then check it, and add whats needed. as for the truck slowing down..........thats motor braking, and its on the newer tacomas for sure......normal.

 

sounds like the same issue im having...people say its normal? how can this be? Tundra isnt like this.

well, yeah its gotta be checked while under normal operating temp, but the dealer has a certain way they do it so its correct. if you are still under warranty, maybe going to the dealer may be a worthwhile thing.

 

have you had your truck to downshift hard and just all of a sudden down a mid-grade slope?? and the revs are like 3000-3500 RPM.

if you find the tranny fluid is fine, it could be a few other things too. I just replaced a throttle position sensor on a jeep grand cherokee that felt like transmission was slamming into gear. Since the sensor was bad, the tranny shifted at the wrong times and let me tell ya - it was rough. Yours doesn't sound that bad so I'd be surprised if that were the case, probably just fluid

 

Normal flat stop and go traffic mostly. No hills of any kind.

 

it happened to me today. it was in 4th ( the gear beside the drive). well im not going to worry about it though.

 

i think that may be tied to the transmission assisted braking or something of that sort and i hate it. need to find a way of turning that off if it's possible, anyone know how?

 

i dont really think there is a way to get rid of the motor braking that you are experiencing.

 

darn, wish i could because i just cannot see how putting more wear and tear on the transmission will save anyone money by sparing brake pads. my 06 Honda Civic does the same thing.

 

^This is a good point. Let's see, would we rather pay $30 for brake pads every so often or $2500 for a tranny rebuild? Hmmmm...

 

yes i think it's an awful idea they came up with and it's a pain in the butt when it turns on and off with the jerky shifting.

 

im having the same problem. did u guys find a solution? low on oil?

 

With almost double the milage from this original post, the tranny is doing just fine. I recently had it flushed twice within a week because of my failure to follow Toyota's recommended maintenance (NOT the dealership). All I can say is don't listen to what the service advisors say and for sure follow the maintenance book. You can still call a dealership today and they'll still tell you that your transmission is not serviceable because its sealed. That's a bunch of betty crocker. Follow the book.

Are you experiencing irregular shifting? for example im in 5th gear going 40mph...
