When you have dissimilar metals (block/head/gasket) in a liquid you have kind of created a battery. The inhibitors in the coolant keep the head gasket from being attacked. The inhibitors eventually wear down and the gasket is the weakest link.

Aluminum isn't nearly as good at resisting chemical attack as the old cast iron engines were.

Dexcool caused a bunch of problems early on, especially if it was used in an application that wasn't designed for it -- anything older.

Yup, just got it back 2 weeks ago. Odd that my wife's 2005 Rav4 had no rust to speak of much less rot after 15 years. The sheetmetal on mine is in pisser shape as well. I definitely plan to get it treated this fall.

    Yup, the old Deathcool..

Job is supposed to happen this morning. Waiting on clearance order. Hurry up and wait is the norm here.

Where I work, it's hurry up we needed it yesterday. After the work is done, it sits around for day or two before someone takes it.
I once told an engineer that if he needed it yesterday why didn't he bring it to me the day before yesterday.

At work I have a reputation of not being afraid of speaking my mind when it comes to how thing are being run. I'm careful about what I say. I make sure I have the facts before I speak.

The (only) great thing about my old job was if I did things well enough I was mostly ignored and forgotten about.

I didn't bother speaking out -- I just prepared for and cleaned up after the brilliant idea of the month didn't work out. :playball:

Yep, they do. Helped a buddy replace one on a quad (Wasn't a Suzuki, but assume they're all similar); little solid-state VR, just up and died. Wasn't anywhere near 16 years old, either, so I'd say you did okay.

Frame, frame, frame, frame!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't over-stress that. Get under there with a chipping hammer and no matter how good it looks, ping every frame rail and cross-member; if ANYTHING goes "thunk" or "thud" instead of "Dingggg", walk away. Make sure you drop the spare and look up under there too. The big thing for a vehicle like this is routine maintenance; if that's been done, and it hasn't been crashed, it's probably a good bet. Be very alert for odours, anything burning, or out of place.

Next, look at all the fluids and make sure they're clean and up to the appropriate levels. Most people will throw fresh oil, but not not brake or PS. Ask when the last time diff, tranny & X-fer case were done (and if the seller has receipts). Look at the inside of the box on each back corner, and around the corner for signs of metal damage from accidents. Also look between the box and the cab for rub marks (if you get rear ended the box can hit the cab).

Have a good look at the front frame, core support & engine mounts for signs of stress & cracking - this looks more like a mallterrain vehicle, but if he was a 'wheeler, then there could be damage. Not a show stopper, but needs to be considered in the price. Look carefully at the front suspension for signs of wear, and maintenance. Check the drive shaft zerks for grease; a good indicator of how well the vehicle was maintained. Beg, borrow, buy or steal a scan tool and scan it for codes, and lastly take it for a good test-drive. Make sure you get it up to operating temp, highway, surface road, and something rough. Get in 4-hi and low, and listen carefully for any noise, especially from the front end, and check EVERY control, radio, heater, A/C, etc. Literally, push every single switch and make sure it does what it should.
