3rd Gen Cowl Induction Snorkel

Well............. I finally did the deed...

I recently removed my fender liners and chopped up my fenders on my 2018 Pro, knowing that I would have to figure out some solution to the air intake that was not exposed in the fender well. I have taken some headlight deep water crossings before this moment, and considered a snorkel, but I personally cant stand them. Here is what I came up with.

So to start off, to those who don't know, this is where your airbox pulls from. You can see where this would create a major issue during water crossings, and even issues during rain, mud, snow, dust, dirt, bla bla bla bla. If you don't want to figure out how to protect this, leave your fender liners on..... Of course the obvious option is either get a snorkel, or fab your own liner. What I wen't with is a less known option, but one to think about if you are handy with a saw and have a free day or 2.

Oh wow, never realized until now how close I was to hydrolocking my truck last year.

 

ohhhhhh yea, I've heard of a few that have nixed the fender liners, then hydrolocked the motor during a crossing, NOT ME!!!!!!

 

Thanks for the great detailed write up, I've been following the 2nd gen, and given the street flooding we've been dealing with on some of our backroads, this just cements my need to go ahead with this (safety) mod!

Used to do this back in the day on the old wheeler builds, don't see why Tacoma people havent done it more often. No ugly snorkel

Alrighty huge thanks to OP for taking this on and documenting it, I finished up the install this weekend. One thing I will clarify and something I learned from this is that the OPs solution will not work for all trim levels (ill go into detail below).

Here are the parts I used:

Originally I saw this post and was going to order the same parts asap, for a while I have wanted to cut fenders but would need to figure out a solution to the intake. I don't like snorkels and I don't want an aftermarket intake so in steps this mod. However, I figured I should look under the hood just to get a visual of what is going to be done.

Come to find out the SR5, TRD Sport, and Limited trims have the ABS module in a different spot than the TRD Offroad and TRD Pro (I don't know if its different from year to year, I have a 2017 SR5). This ABS module is right in between the firewall/cowl and the intake box, this keeps us from the various dual battery solutions, compressor mounts, and also we cannot use the same method as OP. You will see in my parts list I used a flexible hose, this was my solution to get around that ABS module.

The work is exactly the same, drill into the cowl, silicone the plate, drill into the intake box, silicone the plate, connect the two.

At first I was going to leave the ABS module in its place but it would have been such a tight fit that I ended up removing the three 12mm nuts that secure it and shift it towards the motor and used only two of the nuts, when doing this be sure not to pinch your ABS lines.

Overall very happy with it, there is hardly a noise increase and we will see about MPGs as I drive it. Initially was worried about it staying connected but flew down some washboards at 30+ for a handful of miles and no issues so far.
