Engine Needs $2,000 In Repairs

Went to the dealership thursday for my 45K maintenance and I was told that my valve chain cover is leaking oil pretty bad. They showed me where it was and its just put alot of grease and grime around the alternator and the area surrounding it. So i was told it is approximately 2000 dollars to repair. Buuuut the good news is that its covered under warranty thank God. I asked if this is a common problem for the 4.0 V6's and was told it sometimes happens but is mostly rare. also i was told if this wasnt taken care of eventually i will lose my engine. I will post up a picture tomorrow of the leak, and i just wanted to warn yall so you guys dont lose you engine

 

I believe there is a TSB out for this.

 

I asked but the guy said no it just happens but can be covered under warranty, i guess theres a 60K mile warranty on the powertrain

 

You mean the timing chain cover?

 

There is a timing chain cover TSB for a leak. I had mine done.

Really? did they alert you of it or did you find out that it was leaking by yourself

It might be the valve cover, im not sure, my truck goes in monday so ill get the exact info on it and let yall know

 

My timing chain cover started leaking by the power steering pump at 19,000 miles. I got it fixed under warranty.

 

Sorry to hear your truck needs repair. Can you take a few pictures of where it's leaking?

 

I would suggest to the OP that if he is talking about the timing chain cover, make sure they go ahead and change the timing chain, camshaft and crankshaft seals while they are in there. Not sure if they are including that in the service but those parts are a nominal cost and are very little extra labor to change. They certainly are not due for service yet but they will be at 100k, might as well do it now while they are in there. It will save another, out of warranty bill at 100k.

 

I had a crankshaft seal go bad and had an oil leak. That sucked.

I wish. It happened at 69K I think. The service manager at my Toyota dealer is somewhat of a family friend so he got me a decent discount on getting it all fixed, still sucked though. They found it while I was getting my brakes done. That was an expensive day.

 

its easy to replace it and its good to have it done atleast every 70K so when somebody drives through water none gets inside the engine

x2 but not timing chain only guides and al lthe seals including O-rings on oil pump. And O ring on pickup line under the oil pan

 

Shooot, i should see if theres a warranty or tsb for that incase that might happen

 

Looks like I had it done right on time then, LOL.

That and having my u-joints go bad is the only real problem I've had with my Taco (aside from the temp gauge). Honestly, when I was younger I beat the shit out of my truck and its handled it like a tank.

Now that I think about it, u-joints where probably trashed by me. Parking lot at my high school was a dirt lot that would flood every time it rained. I couldn't tell you how many times there where parts flooded that came up to my fog lights in depth. U joints don't like nasty water.

 

Timing belts are a 90k service, and most dealers replace crank/cam oil seals when they have the front half of the motor torn apart. Timing chains are lifetime of the vehicle. Well, per Toyota repair manuals, anyway.
