Almost as capable as the SR or SR5. Those 17" rims are more susceptible to off road damage.

But your hood scoop will look cool!

Explain why the 17" rims are more susceptible to off road damage?

Of course they don't only come in 4x2, but there's a lot of that version sold and there's a lot of people happy with it. I'm going to give and anecdotal guess, that some 80 % of pick up trucks sold are 4x2. Not just Tacomas but F150 et al. It boils down to how you use your truck. I'll also guess that a good number of people that drive around with 4x4 on their bed side have to work remember to engaging 4WD enough to distribute lub.

I would say it depends where you live, you would rarely find a new 2 wheel drive truck in my area.

I had to go rescue my friend on an 18
Mile atv trail up and down a mountain about a week after I got my trd sport. I had no business being where I was but he had a hydrolocked engine in the middle of nowhere. My truck was a beast, flooded trails, rocky as hell.. But that being said, it’s now lifted with 33 inch tires and covered in armor ….

Yep, if you live in heavy snow country 4x4 is important. But most areas (I'm from Chicago) some great percentage of people drive 2WD vehicles even if snow is an issue. I've got an OR and in two years since I've had it, I only needed to engage 4WD a few times for snow during the 100 year storm we had last winter, and honestly I'm pretty sure I would have been fine in 2WD. Just keep the idiots at home.

Plenty of capability. Sport, OR, Pro, 4x4, extra feature or tool… always go with a friend incase you get stuck, they can pull you out. But extra features on the truck does help a bit.

The sport should be good enough. Most camping trails aren’t too crazy because they get a enough traffic and forest service staff that drive through them. Also, Tires make a big difference. Even then you could always add a locker if you need it.

Hammer down through the sand. Ain't no slowing down to engage crawl/rear diff. Gunn it and guide it. But where you live may be different. I thought this was a different photo. But actually this is most times the places I go. So, yeah the Sport has been great for me...

If you have watched any of the offroad recovery videos you will see very capable 4x4’s stuck. Sometimes the guy just drives them out so it’s obvious it’s not the vehicle but the driver.

The other obvious thing is that the owner bought a 4x4 and doesn’t have even the vaguest idea on how to drive it. The biggest thing I’ve seen is the failure to adjust tire pressure. That’s like step one.

Four wheel drive should be engaged about two miles before you think you might just maybe need it. Most vehicles now have auto locking hubs and shift on the fly all wheel drive systems. But I’ve pulled folks that didn’t engage any of the systems until it’s way too late.

Super capable if all you're looking at is a parking lot! Otherwise, great in the short term on hard off road, but if you're like me and you put on 95000 km in less than 3 years, shit seriously starts to fall apart. Not like the Toyotas I drove 30 years ago, that's for sure. Engine still rocks, but otherwise...not so much. Stock dealer tires are super chap too. Pay a lot for looks, but not a lot of substance.

I picked the Sport over the OR because only about 300 of the 35,000 I’ve driven so far have been close to “Off road”. Most of that has been gravel or dirt roads with the occasional trip thru the woods.

I'll keep that in mind next time I need to rescue people with my TRD Sport out on the trails. This first guy is a TRD OR btw.

Mine does pretty good with no factory locker. :notsure:

Lot of misinformation in here saying Sports can't hang. I took mine out bone stock when I first got it and offroaded with a bunch of Jeeps and handled it just fine. Only issue I had was needing to make 30 point turns with this limo.

It’s funny that people don’t realize that the different trim levels are for the most part just marketing ploys to appeal to different demographics of people, creature comforts and price points. The heart and bones of the truck is pretty much the same across the board. Just cause you slap a TRD Off Road sticker on the side of a truck doesn’t mean it’s going to way out perform the rest.

All us TRD Sport owners know that the value of our Sports will still be great when selling compared to the OR which most people know that they are put through hell and back off road. I would never consider buying a new one or for that matter a used one. No thanks I am happy with my Sport.Just saying, I know most OR will be pissed at my response but it is a honest one.
