    Hey all,

I was driving offroad a few weeks ago and when i came back to the paved road i noticed my steering wheel was off center. As i drove to and from work for the next few days whenever id hit bumps the steering wheel would pop into place and then out on the next bump. A few days later the slip indicator light came on so i had the codes checked and got C1290 Malfunction in zero point of steering sensor and C1439 steering angle sensor not initialized. The C1290 code makes sense as the steering wheel is turned slightly when driving straight...im not sure about the C1439 code though.. does this mean that the sensor isnt working or has gone bad and needs to be replaced? is there any trouble shooting i can do before replacing sensors? I have had an alignment done to try to fix the issue but it did not correct it.

When searching the code, this is what i found...

    DTC Code:
    C1439

    DTC Detection Condition:
After the steering angle sensor 0 calibration is cleared due to, for example, fluctuations in the power source, the steering angle 0 calibration cannot be obtained for 0.048 seconds of continuous driving

    Trouble Area:
    • Steering angle sensor (spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly)
    • Yaw rate and acceleration sensor (airbag sensor assembly)
    • Skid control ECU (master cylinder solenoid)

    Thanks for any help!

It sounds like you have something loose in your front end. I'd check that you didn't flatten one of your LCA alignment tabs.
If everything there looks ok, your steering rack might be shifting slightly on its mounts.
Either way, I'd get the alignment checked. I had something shift a couple of years back and my steering wheel was off slightly. It didn't take long to start scrubbing the tread off my front tires. I smoked about half the life off a good set of Michelins.
Until you get everything settled, you will get the errors you are seeing. It's all part of the vehicle stability control (VSC) system.

Better have a look at the intermediate steering shaft while you are at it. It can be viewed in the drivers wheel well. Look at the universal joint. That bumping in and out doesn't sound too good.
