When should I change tranny Fluid ?????

Hello friends from Tacoma World !!!!


I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma Pre-runner 2WD ( i bought it brand new) and it only has 42560 miles( not bad for a 2006 ) ,,,, Does anybody know the what's right milage to change the tranny fluid ???? I only drive in the city ( New Jersey and New York City ) from my house to work and from work back to my house and I go out on weekend but i never gonna off-road with this truck ....

I've seen 60,000 miles throw around quite a bit.

 

I believe for the automatics it's 60,000 if you do any towing and 100,000 if not. I personally wouldn't wait till 100,000...just my opinion.

If you're considering it, why not do it now? Changing tranny fluid is one of those things that you can't do too early, but you can do too late. Besides, city driving is harder on a tranny than highway.

 

From some of the posts I've seen around here....it seems for newbs, it's when they do their first oil change......zing!!!

Toyota recommends 100K miles for normal driving.

Let your tranny change his/her own fluid...

...but seriously...consider using Slick-50 additive when you do it...I had a 5-6 year old auto-tranny Camry that I did that in....it was amazing the difference it made...you don't realize - during the course of day to day driving - how much things loosen up...That Slick-50 additive made it feel like a new car again...

 

What does your owners manual say?

I know my 2.7 has a 100,000 mile change interval but I thought the 4.0 had a 30,000 mile change interval.

Whatever it is I would not exceed it.

 

100,000K for the 4.0 as well; you might be thinking of the rear diff fluid for the TRD Sport??

 

My dealership said that its a sealed unit, never needs changing. So Id say yea....your good at 60k.

 

The dealer says 100K miles. When you look at the cost of fluid vs a replacement automatic transmission I'll continue to change it every 30K miles thank you very much.

 

Overkill and a complete waste of time unless you tow, or off road the crap out of your truck. But hey whatever floats your boat. The Tranny is covered under the 60K mi Powertrain warranty. If Toyota specifies a 100K mi interval 99% of Tacoma owners will be fine going that long. Changing the Tranny Fluid isn't for the average internet mechanic and if done wrong can do more harm than good. Add in $10 for a quart of the Toyota WS fluid and our trucks use 4-5 quarts; every 30K miles isn't cheap.

 

With Toyota saying 100Kmile service for auto's I'd say anytime you want unless you tow or haul heavy loads a lot.

I'm a big proponent of draining the auto tranny pan every so often with the oil change and topping it back up with the same amount that came out. That only gets about 3 qts of the 11 qts total but it keeps the fluid fresh.

 

$10 now? I thought it was about $8 or so. A complete drain and fill takes 11 qts...the pan only is in the 3-5 qt range so if he's doing it every 30k it's about right for doing the pan only.
