Has anyone heard about issues with the serpentine belts on the Tacoma? Was driving home yesterday and started hearing a squeak upon acceleration. Truck started to run hot so I pulled over and saw that the belt is frayed.

The is the truck I just picked up last week… 5 days old and less than 200 miles on it. The truck is at the dealer trying to determine what caused this. Needless to say I’m at a loss here. Never had anything like this happen on a Toyota I owned especially brand new

Water pump issue? Is that coolant all over the place? Wonder if the bearing in it is bad and partially seized. It overheating would point to low coolant or the pump not turning properly which would also cause the belt to wear.

    Misaligned belt from the factory?
I've never seen this on any new car from any manufacturer.

Will let you all know what I find out.

Just needed to vent a little… did not expect this in the first week of owning the truck

Overheating isn't what I want to see on a brand new vehicle, I'd really push for an extended warranty on the engine. Stuff happens and a failed water pump isn't out of the question.

Definitely not a belt problem. Most likely a faulty water pump as stated above. Not common by any means but not unheard of either. I would bet a bushing was bad from the manufacturer (Aisin I believe?) and you pulled the short straw. I wouldn't be too concerned about the water pump replacement but depending on how hot the engine got and how long it was ran without proper cooling, you could run into issues later on. Thankfully it is a brand new truck and you have plenty of warranty left to see if it caused any long term damage. If anything warped, you would know before the end of the factory powertrain warranty.

Call me crazy but I’m just wondering what else could possibly be defective on the truck.

Will be talking to the dealer today.

Anything and everything could be wrong with it… or nothing at all. Don’t worry too much about it, especially when you have warranty. That’s what it’s for.

Random stuff happens. A percentage of vehicles will have a bad part. Nothing to do with overall reliability. Sucks to have it happen. When I bought my Subaru it had a bad synchro in the transmission and would constantly pop out of third gear. Was replaced and never had another issue. When a manufacturer makes hundreds of thousands of a part a few will be defective

OP, you have every right to be disappointed. I'm curious where the coolant came from and if that caused the belt to slip and then fray. I'd be real surprised if a bearing failed so early, but something clearly went wrong already so who knows.

I'm gonna say loose or missing clamp so it's something simple. Good luck getting it fixed.

Might be unpopular opinion but I would push for a longer powertrain warranty after something like this. Vehicles don't like to run hot, I'm sure you know. And I would want to be covered for any future issues that might arise because of this.

I was going to mention this on my reply. The dealer isn’t going to do it, it wasn’t their fault. Toyota corp is going to have to add the warranty to the VIN. It would be a nice gesture if they do.

Makes sense. It would definitely be a smart move on Toyota's part. I HIGHLY doubt there would be an issue, so it would be a no brainer for customer relations, in my opinion. Minimal risk.

Thanks for all the replies. I did take out the extended warranty on my own when I purchased. Always have as I typically keep my Toyota’s 10+ years

still have a 2021 4 Runner on the road

In that case, ask for a new truck. :D

I get the feeling OP. My HVAC mode door was DOA after I brought my truck home...sucks and it pisses you off for sure when your brand new truck has to go back to the dealer.
I'd bug Toyota for the warranty extension, especially for something like that. 3rd party warranties are a pain.
