Long Life Oil Filters??

Recently at WalMart for my latest oil change, and picked up a Fram 10,000 mile oil filter. It says so long as you use fully synthetic oil (I use Mobil 1), you dont have to change the filter for 10,000 miles... What do you guys think?? I know in the commercial trucking business, this is common practice, OTR trucks can go approx. a year w/out filter changes....

Yeah, its good for it according to FRAM..

I like mobile one, KN and amsoil filters over FRAM anyday of the week if I'm gona trust my oil 10k. I usually go 6-7 on Mobile one or KN.

 

Not worth it for the price of an oil filter in my opinion. Nothing against Fram, I like and use their filters but it's just cheap insurance for your engine. Otherwise Chris is correct, you can't compare our trucks to OTR trucks for something like this.

the filter is still going to accumulate the same amout of dirt, as any other filter. I don't get that?? Thats like these new extended OCI's ppl keep talking about. The type of oil you use (or filter) has nothing to do with the amount of wear that is taking place, or the amount of "junk" in the oil for that matter. If you switch to synthetic an think the engine is creating less dirt and moisture than before your wrong. Oil is fouled by moisture as well as a few other items. I think if you use a quality oil, and filter and change it no longer than 5k, you should fair well. IF you are more interested then send off your oil at the end of the interval to a testing lab to see what kind of wear you do have. And it will also tell you if the oil should or needs to be changed. I would do a test with your current filter, check the microns to see what is slipping by then test with the NEW filter to see the difference. Personally I would never use a Fram filter (now that I have seen how they are made and what kind of inferior parts they use.) as they are super cheap, I have seen videos of how they are put together, very cheap. Look for an oil filter rating between 2 to 25 micron, if your brand of oil filter doesn't give you its micron rating then don't buy it.
You want an oil filter to trap dirt, when you use a higher quality full synthetic oil, it does an excellent job cleaning the engine, but it also needs a high quality low micron rating oil filter to collect the dirt.
The way I do it is I change the full synthetic oil at 8000-10,000 miles, BUT at every 3000-4000 I change just the oil filter ONLY and just add enough of new oil to replace what I lost just changing the filter.
I have learned that the synthetic will more quickly fill up the oil filter more quickly and with more dirt cause it does a better job cleaning the engine and I fear of a clogged or bypassed oil filter, I trust the oil, but not the filter.
There are some high quality brands of oil filters out there, but the Fram brand is on the bottom of the list.
I think you can figure out yourself what brands of filters are the best cause I don't want to get into a fight with people in this forum if I name some of best brands of oil filters, there is an excellent brand of filter for $3-$4 thats the same as a brand name $20 oil filter, but not going to tell you what brand that is, don't want to fight.

In today's large/heavy duty trucks, the oil itself may get changed at 100k intervals, this is possible with triple filtration, which illustrates the importance of filtering.
The oil is changed less frequently because it is a synthetic-blend oil which is not subject to the same 'breakdown issues' involved with 'dino' oils using polymers to achieve the same varied viscosity.
An oil 'sample' is taken at mileage/hour service intervals, usually determined by filter life, & tested for substances in order to indicate engine component wear/possible failure.

I would suggest purchasing a quality filter rated at 10k along with quality oil (synthetic) rated at 10k, & schedule a 7,500 mile interval (gives you a little leeway)

 

Thanks guys, the filter was only like $8.79, so it wasn't like I was paying more than what a conventional filter is.... I think I will be more than fine, I am just going to replace filter and oil as I always do, at 5K miles....

 

I've been using the Mann too, with Amsoil XL5w30...I'm sticking to the recommended 5000 mile oil change for now until my warranty runs out.

I noticed last night that Amsoil has redesigned their oil filters so they are compatible with the Toyota engines again.

I might have to look into those again, but you can't beat the price of the Mann ($14.95 vs $4.95).

 

The Fram Extended Guard filter isn't that bad, and built like a Tank. It actually has Metal end caprs and there is a metal screed sandwiched between the filtering media; also it uses a silicone ADBV. This is the only filter of Fram's I'd use and shouldn't be confsued with their crappy orange can or silver extra guard filter; both pieces of crap IMO.

OP, so are you going to change your oil every 5K and change your filter every other oil change? THe question would be why? If you're going to change the oil, then you might as well change the filter. However, if you are using a high mileage filter and a quality full synthetic, you should be fine running a 10K interval. Once my warranty is up, I might go this route.

 

Maybe I was too complicated for people to understand, let me try to explain a better way:
Synthetic oil will clean the internal parts of the engine maybe 10 times better than convential oil, synthetic will pick up and carry and clean the small micron dirt particals that conventional oil will miss, cause synthetic is a uniform much smaller oil molecule in size, it gets into the tight places where conventional oil won't and runs off.
The oil filter will trap this dirt, BUT a high quality oil filter with a small micron filter media will trap the very small size microns of dirt, where in the other hand a bad oil filter that same small micron of dirt may pass thru the filter media and go back into the engine.
As the synthetic does an excellent job cleaning the engine and depositing the dirt into the filter the oil filter will fill up more quickly with dirt, now when its full of dirt it goes into bypass and all that dirt inside the filter will pass back into the engine.
If you're going to keep an oil filter on for 10K miles then I would suggest a cheap, high micron filter and aviod the good filters.

 

omgosh man thanks i use the eao on my altima with 0-30 once ayear....im using 0-30 once a year and the mann every six months.....excellent results

 

That's my plan once my warranty runs out. I have always looked at the signature line of oil, but never wanted to spend the money for a 5000 mile oil change. $10.50 a quart I was thinking about trying out the new Amsoil filters then and change only the filter every six months like you are doing now. It's a small price to pay when you compare it to a new engine.

Unless you have a bypass filter system set up, changing the filter frequently is the next best thing.

 

Our engines are no different than the over the road truckers ( internal conbustion) ours use 5.5 qts, there's maybe 10 gals.Ours are low compression there's are high compression.

The reason they do an oil analysis, and change only the filter, its a cost thing if your using 10 gals of synethic at every oil change, and puting on on 30-40K miles a month,thats alot of oil changes, and down time, v/s a $25 dollar analysis and just a filter. Of course you have to understand the resuslts of the oil analysis.

Myself I change the filter everytime 5K intervals and use dino oil.

Honestly, after Chris4x4 took a part bunch of filters I am surprised there are still people advising using FRAM
Bottom line this is why I check so much when buying used cars. Crappy filter crappy oil will wear engine, cost you later in fuel and performance.
No wonder people get so crappy mileage with our trucks.
