I wouldn't let the deer incident cause doubt. There are other reasons to have doubt about a gun, but I have humanely euthanized an injured deer with a .22 under the supervision of a game warden. If the skull is a clock with the nose at 12, you shoot into the left ear towards 2 or 3, or the right ear towards 9 or 10 (the front edge of the opposite ear, basically).

Has been my daily driver since May of last year. First time I picked it up I shot it better than the Shield I had carried for almost a decade.

Just look at the build thread
No issues with mine, though I did replace the trigger with a PRP trigger. Never had any FTF though. But I've only shot mine. The other one I have is for my fiance and we still haven't shot it yet since I got it.

I picked up a Diamondback DB9. Nearly the size of my P3AT and +P.

It wasn’t the humanely thing to do but I wanted to see if it was capable of putting the deer down with a skull shot. Less than three seconds later it was finished. I have never shot anything outside of paper with this pistol.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Bullets do unexpected things. I've shot a lot of deer and seen a lot of weird situations - case in point 2 seasons ago I was in a blind with a young kid who popped a small buck with a .308 as it was quartering away and it managed to miss any vitals but made the deer lay down in some tall grass. I could see the side of its face in my scope so I put a 180 grain .30-06 bullet into its head and managed to blow the side of its face off but it was still alive sitting there. I then approached it with a .357 magnum I carry as back up and literally straddling it I put a hollowpoint in the back of its head and it jumped straight up into the air and started hopping around like a chicken with its head cut off until it dropped dead about 3 seconds later. Craziest thing I ever saw. Two HIGH power bullets to the noggin and it still had fight in it.

I've also done the same thing as you with a .45 ACP Winchester SXT round and ended up having to put a second one in it. I chalk it up to the close range.

My biggest worry/concern is a .380 double tap just mushrooming on on a rib and/or breastplate of a two legged perp and them not being deterred. +P would do that job much better

The caliber question can take you down a road where you wind up carrying a SW500 on each hip and bandoliers full of ammo. 9mm ball has killed a lot of people over a long period of time. 9mm +p bonded hollow points perform pretty well and are my go to after having all of the common calibers-9, 40, 45.

I think it's important to understand that a gun, any gun, is not the ultimate game ender. Just because you shot someone does not mean the fight is over, and there is no magic caliber. You should definitely get the gun you want but don't let equipment choice fool you into a false sense of security. It would be much better to have a .22 derringer, good situational awareness and violence of action then a Nighthawk with 100 rounds through it.

9mm for a CCW is perfect IMO. 124GR Speer GD +p in almost everything. In winter months with my g17 I do swap some 147GR in.

A .22 on target is better than a cannon that misses. Carry what you shoot well.

    Absolutely. A 6 round .380 or a 6 round 9mm with the same imprint?

For summertime, a Glock 43 with Taran Tactical +3 mag extension. A spare mag with a +3. For winter time, a Glock 17 with a spare mag. Spyderco Yojimbo 2 or Police model (serrated). Stream light microstream usb. TQ in an IWB holster. The 43 setup allows for carry in all 50 states.

No brainer if you want to burn some money, but I wouldn't feel bad carrying a .380. There is just a line where better equipment doesn't make you any more effective. I don't know where that line is for you, but it seems to be a lot lower on the equipment scale than a lot of people think, practically speaking. Nothing wrong with accumulating a bunch of cool guns, but a lot of people (not necessarily here, just in general, and specifically in my own family) believe they are going to win the zombie apocalypse and/or Red Dawn and/or civilian Mogadishu deployment because they have so many high end, latest/greatest guns, but spend exactly 0 time practicing their draw, movement, etc.

I think you said you had a kel-tec. I would personally sell that because I have had bad experiences with Kel TEC, and go Glock/Sig/M&P/XD in 9mm since I'd be changing guns anyway. Good holster, night sights and snap caps, then get to work making that thing an extension of yourself.

Edit-i went back and saw you got a diamond back. Never messed with them, but let us know how it goes.

Kel Tec has been good to me. I spent the time and polished the feed ramp and several hours just racking rounds. Only issue is the ejector can fall out when you remove the slide. Shot many rounds as well when it was cheaper. The DB9 so far is good. I need to spend some time breaking in and putting rounds down range. It is snappy with +P.

As for as SHTF I am not prepared for a frontal assault. Just stay in the woods on my 30 acres and make it last.
