I am wanting to put a 3 inch lift with 33/12.5r15s on my 95 tacoma and am wondering what I should gear it to if I need to do that at all, also what would my gas mileage look like after I put on 33s

Once you change the gear ratio, your speedometer will be off. The digital dakota will allow you to adjust the speed back to actual.

If your Tacoma is a 5 spd manual, IMHO I would go with 4.56, not 488. I know a lot of guys on here are very adamant about 4:88s for 33s. If it's an auto it would be more of a decision between 4.56 and 4.88 depending on my intended use. But that's just my .02

I have had a 5 spd manual with 33s and 4.88 and I have also had a 5 spd manual with 33s and 4.56. I have not regeared with an automatic (yet).

    Ok that makes sense
Yeah mine is an automatic, but would there be much of a difference in 4.56 and 4.88

I wouldn't say it's an immediate "need" item, but you'll definitely feel sluggish after putting the 33s on. I'd recommend a good A/T (preferably not E rated) tire rather than an M/T tire if you don't regear; that will help keep your rolling mass down an mitigate some of the sluggish-ness.

I was getting around 16.5 MPG with 285/75/16 tires and 4.88 gears.

For an auto trans, I 100% recommend the 4.88 gears. Sometimes I even find myself thinking "man... i should've just made the jump to 5.29." I have the Dakota Digital mounted in my glove box, it receives your speed sensor signal and modifies it so that the adjusted signal is received by the ECU, which corrects your speedo reading. The nice thing about it is that it's manually adjustable so if you decide to upgrade tire sizes in the future, you can quickly and easily adjust the speedo reading again. And i think i only paid around $80 for it from Amazon too.

2 main differences.... (1) The 4.56 would put you around 200 RPM lower than the 4.88 at cruising speed, and (2) The 4.56 would be slightly stronger (physically) due to having fewer, larger teeth on the ring and pinion. The downside is the 4.56 will feel less lively and not be as good at pushing weight (i.e. a truck modded with armor, winch, heavy tires, camping gear, tools, etc) as the 4.88's would be.

The labor costs to have 4.56 or 4.88 gears would be the same, so it's a good idea to "future proof" your decision on the gears for what you plan to do rather than what you currently have.

Ok thanks for that and that was super helpful, but do you know about the price range to get it regeard to a 4.56 or 4.88?

You’re looking around $1k for the gears and master install kits and then another $1500 - $1700 for the install. I’ll see if I can find my receipt for the install from a few years ago, but it’s takes a lot of labor hours to set the gears into the right position. This is why you need to “future proof” your gear ratio decision. Yes, you can buy just the ring and pinion for about $250ish per axle, but the install kits and install labor are what make this an expensive mod.

his 95 has mechanical speedo thats cable driven. hel need to change the little drive gear in transfer case. but the larger tires counteract the lower gears so speedo shouldn't be too far off. i wouldn't even change anything

    Good info so far.

If suggest checking out east coast great supply for the regear. You pull your diffs, send em in, they regear and send em back. Took about a week to get my front diff back. I did my rear, but it's really not something you want to do yourself unless you have the tools and a bit more experience.

    Reviving last years conversation here.

BeLance89, where does your Dakota Digital plug into?

sorry for the late reply but I don’t have my Taco anymore so I’m not on here as frequent as I used to be.

for the Dakota Digital, I hardwired it to the ECU behind the glove box and then mounted the controller inside the glovebox using Velcro. Also made sure to use enough wire so I could adjust it from the drivers seat. Just know that this doesn’t “plug in” anywhere. Saying that though,… it’s a super easy install. Just power, ground, Speedo in and speedo out if I remember right.
