So I just dropped the truck off at the stealership. The past couple of days I have had this strange burning smell coming from the truck after I have run it for more than 10 minutes. They called me back saying the water pump is bad and is leaking which is causing that smell. My question, The truck only has 34,000 on it. Is it common for these trucks to have water pump problems? If the water pump is going so early is there anything else I should be looking for before the warranty runs out?

Sitting here at my local Toyota dealership. 73,000 miles on my 08 Tacoma and there are replacing the water pump. I have the extended warranty so I only need to pay my $50 deductible.

My 06 Tacoma also had the water pump replaced at about 45k miles... WTF Toyota.?.?.

My '01 had the timing belt replaced at the 90,000 mile service per schedule.. They noticed a drip from the water pump, so with it exposed it was much cheaper to replace it right then. Nothing ever 'failed' on my '01... had it for almost 5 years and 136,000 miles!

Yeah my '99 Tacoma never had any issues. I put over 475k miles on it. Still had stock auto trans and stock 3.4v6.

It's always smart to do the water pump when you do the timing belt. You're paying for most of the labor anyway.
