I have a 2009 DCLB 4x4 with a bad right rear wheel bearing. I need to have it replaced and am not doing the work myself. Will take it to independent shop not dealer. If anyone has had one replaced recently could you give me a ballpark figure for the repair (parts and labor). I understand cost will differ from shop to shop and region to region. Just trying to get an idea of cost. I want to use quality oem replacement bearings. Also should I go ahead and have the bearings in both the rear right and left replaced at the same time? I have 102,000 miles on it. The truck is in perfect condition otherwise.

Had to have the drivers side rear bearing replaced in my 09 last February. Guy let me use my own parts and charged me roughly 2 hours labor which came to around $133. I live in a very rural part of PA so labor rate was low.

As far as parts, I went with the Timken assembly from Rock Auto. Now, this assembly uses the same Koyo bearing that is OEM to Toyota at a fraction of the price, I wanna say less than $120 shipped to my door. The OEM assembly at the dealer was $495 plus tax. The other parts (seal, o-ring, bearing retainer, and snap ring) were bought at the dealer for $60. Plus add in some fluids. Overall I was slightly over $300.

As far as replacing both, it's up to you. My truck had 13x,000 miles at the time. Looking through service history the passenger rear bearing was replaced in 2014 at 86K.

    Suggest to replace both sides.

The bearings have been through the same life. If one is being replaced....its only a little more effort to replace the other side.

Or do one side, then you may need to do the other side in a month or so. Meaning, you pay for it twice.

IIRC. The rear diff needs to be opened to allow the 1/2 axle to be pulled out. Then access to the seal/bearing is possible.

Might as well do them both WITH new axle seals.
If your rear brakes are pretty low, might as well do them too.
All the brake parts and hardware have to come off to get the axle out.

And of course, diff fluid will be needed.
Some will run out when doing the job.
If you are paying someone, they’ll probably drain the diff to make the job much less messy.
    (I feel you should anyways)

I haven’t done my bearings. But did do a seal.
It was not a job I want to do again.

I don’t know the cost of labor or parts.
The seal was maybe $14 or so. I really can’t remember.
I used the OEM seal from Toyota

I guess what I’m saying is,
The job can be a little (more) expensive if you want to do it right and tackle a few “maintenance” things while you are at it.

2 hours labor? you got a hell of a deal! ive done mine a few times, its a pain in the a$$! you need the bearing with the ABS ring, the colar, seals, dissassemble rear brakes, pull the axles, cut off the old collar, use special tool to press off the old bearing and press on new bearing, reassemble, press in new seals, refill with oil, and rebleed brakes. its not a simple job. i would guess $400 in parts and 4 hours labor for a shop.

I was also told not to bring that thing back for the other one though :rofl:He even broke his 20 ton press getting the old one off, but still stuck to his 2-3 hour labor quote. I did tip him a good bit more the following week on a state inspection.

BTW, the ABS ring is a separate piece on the axle, before the collar IIRC. Don't break this part, it's expensive as Hell for what it is.

@Sprig, did you ever get the rear wheel bearings replaced? I already replaced both my fronts earlier this year and now it sounds like my right rear is going out. I called the local dealer just for giggles and they quoted me $502 for the parts and $700 labor (that's for 1 side). I'm going to look for a local independent in SoCal but was curious if you had yours done and what was the approx price.

It turned out to be my front left wheel bearing. Total cost parts and labor $600. I’m in the Sacramento area and I checked a couple other places and they were all around $600. Didn’t even bother checking with the dealer.

Ah, good it was just the front. The rears are turning out to be a PITA.

should probably go in there any way to check condition of rear brakes, and replace axle seals before the leak gear oil onto the brakes and ruin them

It’s definitely not a job you want to let just “anyone” do.
You need the right equipment and jig to do it right.

I’ll definitely be letting someone that knows how and has done it before do mine, when I need it done.
I still remember what @Larzzzz went through, I don’t want any of that. No way.

i bought the jig to replace them it’s a nice setup, would be cool to just trade it around but it’s heavy so shipping would kill that deal. But for anyone local to me I could do the work if you bring the axle shafts over. It’s really not that bad of a job but you need to know what you’re doing.

    No, I haven’t seen it.
I dropped cable TV 5 years ago. And I haven’t seen any movies in at least 7 years.
If I can’t find it on YouTube, I don’t watch it.

Had Hulu until it went to like $50 a month. Then dropped it.
At least most of the cable stations are streaming the Olympics.
