Cost to Replace Rear Wheel Bearing

Replaced a front wheel bearing 4 months ago right at 99k miles. Well, an independent local shop did it all for $500.

 

That movie is over 20 years old, comon!

 

@TnShooter to answer your question, ask yourself which state is the most like hell to live in (hint, the most like hell on the east coast) and that should make it pretty easy.

 

New Jersey. Been there and don’t really want to go back.
New York wasn’t bad. But definitely didn’t “fit in”.

My brother says Louisiana was awful, he went there after Katrina.
He says he’ll never go there again.

Louisiana isn't bad once you get used to triple digit temps during the summer and the occasional alligator strolling down the street.

This is what you need to do the replacement, it really is a huge time saver. I was going to make one but someone else already did for a decent price so I value my time a bit more over saving a few pennies. Even purchasing the tool it's still cheaper than paying the piper to replace them.

 

What size press do you have?
I’ve heard they can be really hard to press?

I have access to a 30 Ton.
But I haven’t really done anything like it before.
I’m not against try though?

 

just a 20 ton HF with the air over hydraulic pump. It hasn't let me down. If you are worried you can always heat up the bearing and retainer with a torch anyhow, since you'll be replacing it's not a big deal as long as you don't add too much heat directly to the axle shaft.

I'm still running the axle that came with the junkyard diff. Sadly, I can't find a local garage that will let me use their press, and I don't have the space for one.

If another axle gets fucked up, it'll be by my hands. Hell, I can fuck things up as good if not better than a professional.

The 20 Ton replaced mine no problem. About 3 hours start to finish once I had all the right parts. You can buy all the tools you need and still be ahead of the cost of having a shop do it. Think I'm into it for about $600 and that includes ALL new parts, including seals and the tool to do the work.

Timmy the Toolman has some great videos on how to do the bearings and seals on 3rd Gen 4Runners and I THINK they are the same as the 1st gen Tacomas (someone please correct me if I am wrong). https://youtu.be/AVhSDnw2ugo that is a link to his first video of doing an ABS rear end. He did a "part 2" where he does another bearing job but using a different easier tool. He also includes part numbers and purchase info on the bearing puller tools. Unfortunately for me, I get to do this job later this week.
