The ice/snow is gone now but while it was here I thought about chaining up and taking a ride. Started to wonder if chains would adversely affect my lsd. Wouldn't want to mess up anything just for a joy ride. IDK, any ideas?

While I was up north during snow on the pass my LSD was doing all the beeping (no weight in the bed), once I put the chains on it never flashed or beeped at all.

The beeping is the VSC alerting you that you are sliding and it is correcting the slide. If you were on the highway, it is a way to tell you to back off the accelerator before you wreck your truck.

The chains eliminated the sliding, so your VSC didn't beep. Your TRAC (LSD system) doesn't have any sounds but does brake any tire that looses traction so the tire with traction gets the torque to keep you moving.

Okay thanks. It was just a passing thought because here in central Ga. we rarely get any snow/ice. Just thought I'd throw it out there and see what people with more ice/lsd experience had to say about it.

If your worried about it just hold the VSC switch 3 seconds and it will disable the auto lsd and give you an open differental.

    *BUMP!*

Where would one order some chains from? I just had an unfortunate incident with my Prerunner a block from my house (After driving 70 miles today without incident). I came around a turn, kept turning, next thing I knew the front was in a yard, the rears were on the road on ice, and I couldn't get any traction to back out. Threw down salt, getting ready to air down, then a Dodge Ram showed up and gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. Only cost me a couple beers, but still I'm wondering if some chains wouldn't have given me enough traction to pull out. (4wd owners, please don't state the obvious!)

cheaper to have a hand winch and a tow strap, then tire chains.. lot faster with the hand winch too

I do have a tow strap and a logging chain, no winch though. The problem was, in my location there was nothing that I could have hooked onto even if I tried.

bag of kittey litter..dump it around the tires and you have some traction. Even the floor mats can be used in a pitch. Otherwise, spinnem till they are hot..that melts some ice too. Been there done that

I used the mat method to get out of the yard the other day... I didn't use my mats of course. :D Then my wife recognized they were from her Neon.... yeah, not so much. The mats did work really well!

I've used kitty litter before, but I think you've gotta have some significant ice or snow under the tire to make it worth it.

In certain situations (snow cover on a steep incline, par example) the kitty litter actually hindered the cause to get a stuck Camaro out of the driveway - it sucked up all moisture, but then became a slippy mud-like covering, and that's all the tires were grabbing.

Not a bad idea to have some on hand in a pinch, though! Could just as easily carry salt along side it, too!

Like I said, it was just a passing thought. Maybe once every 10-12 years we more than an inch or two of snow. This year it was ice from the beginning. I've got some chains out in the shop that I don't think I've ever used. I really don't even remember where they came from. After a couple of days of being iced in, I started thinking about taking a ride(milk sammich, ya know). Not like I was going to go out and buy chains.
