Hi I am on a camping trip where my tacoma started making this loud clunking sound when I hit bumps on the road. I have jacked it up and checked ball joints and to see if anything is obviously loose or worn out and couldn’t find anything. Expect for the drivers cv seemed to have more play into the front diff than the passenger. Anybody got any ideas?

Is it clunking when the suspension is compressed or when it droops out?

It’s just from on road driving so I think both make it happen

It ended up being a broken leaf that was catching on the front part of the mount. Thanks for the suggestions though.

    Ouch. Sucks.
I never thought that leaf springs break but I keep hearing about that happening

Don’t know it they still do it but Toyota used to put a small spacer between the leafs. This was the cause of my leaf break on my ‘07. The scary part was that it was stick out toward the tire. Yeah it had a few inches to go but damn, talk about a design flaw.

Have your springs ever been replaced? I got a notice for rear spring recall a few years ago because they had problems with them breaking. Both of my 2008 DC rear spring packs were replaced for free.

FWIW, the play in your cv is totally normal, glad you found the issue though.

I called the toyota recall number and they said my truck isn't covered under the recall, no explanation why.

I do not believe Toyota can deny a recall . They are mandated to perform this repair for safety reasons .
Highly suggest making an attempt to get some money back or at very least digging into to some research .

I'm going to, I've found that if the leaves have 3 clips it should be covered but if it has 4 it will not be. Thanks for that info too
