I replaced the oil in my 2014 V6 PreRunner Tacoma with Synthetic 5W30 and used a 90915YZZD3 filter. The warm oil drained for at least 30-40 minutes and I added 5 quarts of the 5W30.

The filter prior was a 90915YZZD1.

I drove from GA to PA (1600 miles round trip) this week and noticed occasional valve chatter when the transmission shifted from 1st to 2nd / 2nd to 3rd AND - the noise only appeared when I accelerated slowly, feathering the petal ... if I gave it a little more gas to bring up the RPMs, the noise would disappear.

This is a new noise, never heard it before w/this truck. Initially, I thought it was the fuel, different blends along the way.

The oil level (w/the truck level) after sitting 30 minutes is between the two dots in the dipstick. It looks to be at the right level.

However, using the D3 vs. the D1 filter, I may be a little short on oil when the truck is running. The Google says valve chatter can be a sign of low oil pressure.

So ... with the 90915YZZD3, how much oil should I have in there for a V6? It took 5 quarts, and when sitting level after cooling down, the oil level is between the dots on the stick.

Will 2-3 ounces of oil make a difference @ low RPM? The D3 can hold more than the D1 but could this be the culprit?

No, 2-3 ounces, or even a quart won't cause any issues. They way you describe it it sure sounds like the engine knocking under load - lugging from the up shift.

Should take around 5.5 quarts but 1/2 qt low shouldn't hurt anything.
There is a TSB for engine pinging under aceleration at low RPM, I wonder if thats what your hearing.

"Some 2012 – 2014 model year Tacoma vehicles equipped with 1GR-FE engines may exhibit spark knock (detonation) during light acceleration and/or uphill in hot weather (80 ◦ F or higher)."

Well, that seems to sum it up ... it didn't do it downhill. Will Toyota honor the work in 2021 for a 2014 Tacoma?

I have had this truck since 2013 and never heard this before. Only after this recent oil change did it appear. Well, and driving from GA to PA and using gas from other states.

Would it be worthwhile adding a little more oil to see if it helps? The difference is the larger capacity filter, D3 vs. D1.

Mine did it bad for awhile but when I took it to the dealer they said they couldn't get it to do it so I left it at that, they didn't do the reflash that I know of, it still does it ocasionally but it hasn't for awhile.

So unless you get a dealer that's familiar with the issue good luck, I would print out the TSB and bring it with you when you take it in.

If your out of warranty you will most likely have to pay out of pocket anyway unless you find a nice dealer.

No, your oil level is fine. You're not getting the noise because your oil sump is starving.
If it makes you feel better, add some oil. But it likely won't have an effect on the noise you're hearing.
If it were me, I'd drive it locally for a couple of fill-ups and see if you still hear it.

    ??? total miles on engine

    daily driving environs ???

flat level it doesnt take 40 mins to drain oil

top shelf ‘ Synthetic Oil ‘ any brand should not present any issues

the stock toyota oil filter is top grade.............not following the fence straddling on oil filters

good Synth + stock filter = great results

why do a lot o ziggn / zaggin

depending on the consistent environs U travel/drive

mixing synths is a no no as there are 4 distinct types

pick a brand STICK WITH IT !!

TSB's are covered under the factory warranty and/or factory extended warranty only unless specified otherwise.

    URz is a dailey commute

actually considered by SAE to be nearly abusive...........from the stop & go bump/grind

essentially by the time Ur vehicle is ready to stretch its legs..............U shut it off

next time U do plugs..............label & keep in order !!

    do a compression check

noise U r hearing i suspect is a lean engine detonation

The delta in the volume of oil in your current filter versus the old filter becomes irrelevant once you’ve changed the oil, run the engine, and confirmed oil level via the dipstick. If it’s halfway between the dots you can add a few ounces but I doubt there would be any impact on the issue you’re noticing.

Try a tank of premium gas to see if the noise goes away, if it does, probably detonation. If it doesn't, don't worry about it, turn up the radio.

It’s just the taco knock. My 2011 has done it for 140k miles. The 2012+ supposedly had a TSB trans reflash but it was hit or miss if it fixed it.

Like the valve tick it’s pretty normal.

It may be detonation, I can't tell. I've had this truck since it rolled off the lot, it never made this noise before.

How do I tell if it is detonation or valve chatter?

If it's only doing it under load It's probaly spark knock, as suggested you can put in a tank of high octane gas and see if it goes away.
Valve noise I would expect to hear all the time as the 4.0 has mechanical lifters not hydraulic.

Valve chatter is constant it doesn’t come and go. Knock sounds like marbles rattling in the engine.

I had the TSB done on my ‘13 and it helped alot, dont recall hearing anymore.

Higher octane fuel helps too but i only use 87

I will contact Toyota tomorrow to see if I am still eligible for the TSB.
