How long did you have to wait for your 2021 factory order?

    Hopefully it works out for you, but I went thru a similar situation and waited a month for the truck only to find out it was already sold before it hit the train

    They credited it back to my card.
    They were nice about it, but the dealer im working with now warned me that would happen, and said when it did to come on by and he'd order me whatever I wanted. He held true to his word and didn't even want a deposit, but he is a friend of a friend.

    Glad it worked out for you in the end. These dealers are a pain in the ass.

    Thankfully I reached out to another dealer too.

    I went into my dealership on June 21st and ordered 2021 Cement Sport. Payed $500 for them to order it. My salesman contacted me 3 weeks later and told me he couldn’t get the truck because Toyota had moved the deadline up to order a 21 because they was so far behind and we had missed that deadline by 10 or 12 days. Told me not to worry about the $500 because they wouldn’t run my card because it was their fault that deal fell through. They said they could get me a Lunar Rock which I didn’t want.

    Dang. I'm guessing they told you this before they were able to get it allocated or a temp VIN assigned? Hopefully for me that was just a local dealer thing and not nationwide. I think getting the temp VIN and a build date window is a good sign (fingers crossed).

    Not hard to believe.

    Anyway Update Part Deux:

    After of lots of strong arming I was able to get a temporary VIN. It was a pretty painful process. Overall, left a bad taste in my mouth.

    The temp VIN shows a truck that is consistent with what I wanted. But since the process felt like pulling teeth, I thought I'd do some more digging.

    I called three other dealers in the greater Houston area. I explained that I was looking for a particular Tacoma, I was willing to wait, and wanted to talk.
    After talking to sales at all three (other) dealers (basically explaining my circumstance & that I was feeling dissatisfied etc.), two of the three sales guys put me in contact with their inventory manager.

    Talking with both inventory managers, I was able to get them to check on my temp VIN - basically to see if they could determine where it was going.
    In both cases they were not able to determine where the truck was going nor, who had asked for it.

    "Fine", I thought. Could be another dealer/distributor had asked for it, its a dealer trade thing.. OR maybe they can't see those details..
    But at this point I was too invested..

    I emailed my sales guy at the original dealer, and asked specifically to see documentation showing that they had asked for the truck and it was coming to their lot. Essentially, I just wanted to see their order documentation. If they had it - no worries, I'll wait for the truck. If not - I'll have to consider if they gave me a dummy VIN (a vin that they could see in upcoming inventory but was potentially allocated elsewhere).

    The reply was basically: "Just trust me, I see these trucks come in all the time. We are definitely going to honor our agreement"
    That's not very reassuring... I asked for documentation and I get a "Trust me"

    That's ahh "negatory on the cost of this mow-chine there Red Ryder"..

    Fine, deposit is refundable.. I'm just going to refund. Even if they are trustworthy, they have just been a PITA to work with.


    As a final nugget... One of the other (further) dealers has a truck with the exact packages I want (on the lot), just in a different color. I'm just going to go get it....
    Not going to pull my hair out just for a color choice.

    Consider wrapping it immediately in whatever color you want. Get that Lunar Rock if you want. Don't get dicked around by dealers, go with the one that is treating you appropriately.

    The trucks they have coming in are probably not your spec requirements anyway. They are making you wait for nothing most likely.

    My dealer has been great, and when I asked them at the onset for something showing the order, they very quickly sent me a screenshot of the allocation request they sent to Toyota, complete with the original allocation they were trading mine for.

    I talked to them yesterday to confirm that my build was still on for this Tuesday. They replied and said they had just checked it on Wednesday and it was still on for this Tuesday...they checked it again to respond to my email, and it had been delayed a week. Dang it. Oh well, still less than two weeks away.

    Wow dealers in the U.S. sure screw their customers around. I went in ordered my new 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport Premium on May 6th 2021 and the dealer came out straight said it would 6- 8 weeks for delivery. Never gave me a VIN number as I did not ask for one cause I didn't you could get one. Anyways left it at that and never called and bug him about any update on my truck as they have no control over that. Short story my truck arrived at the dealership on the 23 June and pick it up plated and ready to go on the 25 June. So I was thrilled after reading that you guys down there have waited up to 6 + months to get yours. Sorry for those that are being screwed around and waiting for ever to get their new vehicles. Be patient they will come.

    Not a dealers are like that but the horror stories get the spotlight. A lot of variables go into the allocation process but that is awesome you got yours that quickly. What were your "requirements" on the specs?

    Man there's some real a-holes out there running dealerships.
    I really feel for you guys who are going through all this b.s. with a dealer because I know it doesn't have to work that way.
    My particular experience was pretty cut and dried compared to all the stuff I'm seeing on here.
    Took my 'Build Your Toyota' sheet into the dealership, met with the salesman, we settled on a price, wrote a $500 check for a deposit and I was on my way.
    Salesman kept me updated weekly via email, got my temp VIN when he had it, approx. build date, etc...
    Delivery got pushed back a couple of times by a week or so but no big deal because he called me and let me know.
    2021 SR5, AC, LB, AT, 6cyl, 4x4 in Red with some additional doo-dads I wanted.
    Was expecting it on a certain date then salesman called and said 'hey, your truck is arriving early - in fact tomorrow!'
    Painless and drama free.
    The dealer really does make the difference in these things.
    I think every car maker has the occasional turd dealer wherever you live and it seems like lots of people know about them - but for whatever reason they stay in business.

    I ordered about a month ago was told I would get it late October and they weren't sure if it would be a 2021 or a 2022 (but most likely a 2022). The recently let me know that it will probably be January or February!
