    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out how it might be possible to run a handgun safe (either a tuffy under-seat model or the american security hide-a-safe ideally) underneath my passenger seat. The search function seems to indicate that there isn't enough clearance in the stock configuration. Any idea if something like the Desert Does It seat jackers might provide enough clearance? Anyone actually attempted such a project? I typically carry my handgun on my person, but would like the option of securing it in my vehicle should I feel the need to do so, without giving up my center console.

It would be neat if someone made a replacement metal "safe" for the little cubby box in the bed. I've always thought that would be a nice spot to store a disassembled firearm for when those of us with a carry permit travel to a neighboring state with no reciprocity.

ETA: I know you can swap the latch out for a little 4 pin tumbler lock but it's just thin plastic, so I wouldn't want to use it for storing that sort of thing even with that mod.

This is just my opinion but even with a lockbox I don't think a vehicle is secure enough for firearms storage.

Sometimes in life you need to go places where you can’t be armed. But as you go through your day do you go unarmed for that entire day because you need to go to the post office for ten minutes?

No storage anywhere is completely secure. But you can make stealing things harder and more time consuming.

There is zero room under either front seat. I cant even get my hand under there to grab keys that fall.

I know I'm just being obnoxious but if your firearm is in a lock box when you need it, you're probably not going to get to it in time.

I feel like the best place is on your body. If i needed to go into a bank, ill lock it in the glove box for 5 minutes.

    I realize as soon as god & everybody knows I h a v e a gun

    IM A TARGET !!

EDC is NOT a gotcha moment.................NO room for a hero

i can get my glock in the same amount o time it takes U to get a pistol UNholstered

Situational Awareness will keep U Out o Trouble more so

than a quik draw or an ‘ on the scene ‘ attitude

I have a Vaultek Lifepod that's cable locked under the drovers seat. I only ever use it if I am going in somewhere that I can't carry, and it's only temporary but I like it so far. It's only accessible from the back seat though, can't pull it put the front, but when it's tucked up under the seat, you can't see it or tell it's there at all.

I installed a 'Locker Down' center console. Seems to work great and appears to be very secure. Yes, you do loose easy access to your center console but for me I think the trade-off is worth it. Bonus too that the Locker Down safe still allows access to the USB ports and has a pass-through for charging cables if you need it.

As far as ease of access goes, I typically leave three of the four numbers set so I only need to adjust one of them if I need to get into it in a hurry. Never know when I might need those cough drops

The problem I have with the under seat lock boxes is that the cable typically sticks out over the floor mat. That tells the observant thief what is there.

So you don't carry, but feel qualified to express opinions on a subject that you don't know anything about. Got it.

For the OP, I have a Hornady lock box cabled to the seat rail on the drivers seat. Mine probably a bit large for what I carry, but there are different sizes. It's a key lock system. A bit cumbersome since it can only be accessed from the rear of the seat, but it does the job. Note that I have 1" rear seat risers, so it makes it easier.

No lock box is 100%, but the goal is to keep the casual thief from breaking a window, rummaging around the console or under the seats and finding a free gun. If you tuck the cable in, it's hard to see what's down there. Or drop an old coat on the floor.

As to the "Are you going somewhere that you know you will need a gun?" question. As a wise man said, "If I knew where I was going to need a gun, I wouldn't need a gun."

I also have a lifepod under the front seat, however I can get mine in and out from the front. Takes a little finesse because I have to lift the seat adjuster and pull it out without moving the seat, but a little practice and it gets easy. And before the "holster or nothing crowd" sees this it's also just for temporary, discrete storage.
