I'll agree that maybe he should try hand polishing first... It's not a bad idea, if he's gonna try it.. But by the looks of it from the pic, he'll be there till Christmas rubbing it out.

I made the comment I did, based off experience... Having went to school for body/paint, worked in shops/ having my own, restoring vehicles etc... So I do know what I'm talking about...

I also made the comment (not really saying he should try it), but as in telling the process that would happen if he took it to a shop and it was too deep of a scratch to just buff out...... And if someone were to try and buff it out with just a machine (no sanding), you can also easily "burn thru" that way too with out sanding..

Back when I was a kid you could do that. Can't tell you how many times I got "the belt" from my dad. Now if you even try that the kid calls child protective services on you and you end up needing a lawyer.

This thread went from buffing a scratch to butt stuff to not supporting single moms (read strippers) to children with disabilities back to buffing a scratch. I LOVE THIS FORUM!!!

I'll take an accountant over a nurse any day. A lot of nurses have egos that make even medical doctors laugh. I've been there done that and walked away.

Man I can understand the upset. I would feel exactly the same way if one of my kids did that. I want to offer something to you. God has blessed you with that child and that truck. If you just buff it a bit, make it as minor as possible based on what it is, you will have something you can save for special dumb things kids do. When he is 8 or 10 you can remind him and show him what he did. It might be worth it, to leave it

OK guys, so if I want to try buffing it out just by hand, is there a filler compound kind of thing in a dark/gray color that would at least make it way less noticeable? I know someone mentioned touch up paint or a filler. I want to try DIY before going to a money (cough, cough) I mean body shop. I don't have an orbital or buffer though. My fingernail catches in a few places, but not in all places. I think only a few parts are too deep. Even if I could get it to a temporary place for now so it doesn't rust or cause further issues that may help. I may sell the truck in the next year so thats why I'm not TOO worried about it being pristine again.

Also, any estimates or guesses on what repainting the door (or part of the door) would run at a body shop?

$200-300. If you have a good body shop that can fit you in it might be cheaper but… good luck. This made me feel better about my kids dragging their hands down the dirty truck… :annoyed:

first world problems; but to each their own on the definition

one day at a time with kids; or in some cases one hour at a time

best of luck and as someone else mentioned could be worse, you'll live another day

I had luck fixing similar scratches on the hood of a black Honda once. I bought a small bottle of colour match touch up paint and filled in the scratches with the brush, let it thoroughly dry and then wet sanded with a few grades of sandpaper.
Cheap fix but labor intensive and after waxing it was barely noticeable.
