I have a 1998 tacoma 4x4 V6 manual. I took the shift boots off today and noticed I have what appears to be a vacuum line missing. Can someone tell me what this is for? I have not had any issues that I can tell. I have googled and can not find any info on this. . This comes off the right side of the 4x4 transfer case.

    Thanks
    Kent

Do you have ADD (automatic disconnecting differential)?

I *assume* that would route towards the actuator on your diff.

If you have manual hubs, then I wouldn't know where else that line could go/come from.

    That's the breather tube.
Extension hose runs to engine compartment and ends with the breather cap.
Stay out of deep water until you replace the hose.

    Learned something.

My wild guess would've been way off as I couldn't imagine such a line being that high up anyway.

If OP does have vacuum ADD front differential wouldn't the Tcase switch activate the actuator ? @Kwikvette

ADD receives signal from the transfer case, regardless of transfer case type, when one goes into 4H.

    Where exactly from?

Well, I'm on my phone so I'm too lazy to look

Just in case @Jsforfun2003 needs to see the VENT for Tcase breather.
Red circle is switch for ADD actuator.

I was just in there today chasing an oil leak at the top of my t case. I thought a breather might be clogged causing pressure build up and a leak. I found my hose to be disconnected like OP's. I reconnected it to the t case. The other end of my hose was connected to my transmission, and the FSM seems to confirm that this is the intended setup. I also found not one but two breathers, see photo.

What could be the purpose of linking the t case and transmission with a hose?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
We all have those days like me trying to weld steel to aluminum Then go through all the trouble shooting trying to figure why it was not working . I do get reminded of that often but those coworkers seem to be passing on.

You must be working to hard at welding Class !!

Just how good would a breather on the bottom of a gearbox work ??

If you could keep any gear oil in.

I recall when a manufacturer sent me an aluminum bung vs the steel I requested for my AEM wideband for a car I was tuning.

We were all ready to go and I ran the wiring/gauge/etc only to get to the exhaust and find out I got the wrong bung :annoyed:
