I got a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 (stock)
Keeping this baby stock for a while, mainly will use it to go camping and some easy off-road trails until skill/confidence goes up.

Add a flashlight (like a headlamp) should you need to use any of those items late in the day (dusk) or at night. With a headlamp your hands are free to do other stuff.

I wouldn’t say any of those things are essential for camping and easy trails. Maybe take the truck out a few times and then decide on what is essential.

Full disclosure: I own all of this (or similar) and more.

My advice would be to skip all of it and buy as you see a need. The truck, stock, likely outstrips your ability and ambition. If you really want to spend, get the compressor and deflator for comfort. Maybe a shovel and jump starter for self recovery if you will be truly remote.

In retrospect sliders would have been a better use of $700 for me. Basically all of my camping gear has a higher ROI as well.

 

I have the same arb snatch strap. Used it my first weekend out and had a couple people ask wtf it was cause they were expecting a hard jerk and didn’t realize it stretched under load. Couple guys ordered them that night after seeing it in action. I have a deflator tool and a compressor. Everything else I have held off on buying as I haven’t had a need for them. Recovery boards are probably my next purchase but I’m in no hurry.

 

Good list. I would suggest a full size shovel and ax. I usually get stuck in deep snow and don’t want to lay on snow.

 

Thank you guys so much for the great feedback. I really appreciate it, I think I’ll keep this list saved and take a camping trip with my buddy in 2 weeks which will involve some minor off-roading nothing too crazy and it has a lot of traffic just in case the worst case scenario happens. Based on that trip I will have a better idea of what I actually need vs what would look cool to have with a taco. I’m sure down the line I will have this thing lit up like a Christmas three but for now let’s see what me and my taco can get away with.

the viair 400P might be a bit of overkill if you're not running 35+. 300P is less than half the price and works the same speed afaik (just with a shorter duty cycle that doesnt matter on most tires).

I have the ARB EZ Deflator, and maybe Im not using it right, but it's super slow unless you have the valve core remover in the a very specific spot and hold it there. I watched different videos and read the instructions. 1/10 would not recommend if it isn't defective

I keep forgetting about getting a hatchet. Several times I could have used it on a fallen tree on the trail. Thanks for the reminder and its now ordered from Amazon.

 

A bow saw is much quicker for this stuff IMO. I keep the hatchet for splitting wood though.

 

Come now you know only a $300 Matt’s recovery rope will work.

I have those boulder deflators and have yet to have all of them work correctly, they either don't deflate enough or not at all. I ended up deflating my tires multiple times last week individually using the other end because only one of them was actually deflating and it was doing so very slowly.

 

You can build your own inflator/ deflator from Home Depot parts. It will work better and faster than any of the expensive pre made hunks of junk.

 

Air compressors and deflators are not required for camping and easy trails. If you need to deflate your tires you are already on beyond easy trails IMHO. I have an air compressor and I still only air down when I know I’m going to be hitting some gnarly stuff and will be doing so for an extended period. I think people in general exaggerate the need to air down.

 

Have to disagree. Sometimes it’s just more comfortable to air down.
