I have a 2020 sr5 access cab with a solid fold tonneau cover. I am looking for solutions to carry kayak while still using my bed to carry camping gear. I am trying to stay away from the rooftop brackets because I don’t like the look of the feet overhanging to the inside of the doors. I also am a bit skittish of drilling into my roof for a permanent roof rack I was thinking about a set of Billiebars. Has anyone used billiebars or other cross Ed bars with kayak j hooks or hanging out the back over bed cover. Other suggestions welcome. Thanks for any help

I do what you don't want to do:

I do have the KB Voodoo bed bars that work with my OEM tonneau cover. I would think you could incorporate a hitch extender rack with those bars. I'm sure I have seen a picture somewhere on TW, but can't find one at the moment.

I know you said you still wanted to use your bed, but similarly to what the person above me posted you can actually use a bracket to help support the weight of a lengthy kayak. Just note that you might want to get one with a taller "T" section than I have, as I needed to use something to raise the height of my receiver to make it so that the bracket came above the height of the back of my tailgate.

When I go camping with the kayaks I just take off the tonneau, stack the kayaks together in one half on the bed and stack camping gear in the other half, and tarp it.

the dream is an uptop alpha rack but shipping to Canadian is gonna hurt.

Used it extensively for a canoe in the past, never scratched anything. Scratches might come from the boat touching the roof if you are not careful loading/unloading, not the pads.

sand or dirt coming off the kayak and getting under the pads has been my experience, I only use them on my TDI that I don’t give a poop about.

I take it your not one of the thousands of people from Ontario that flock to the maritimes in the summer. It’s okay if you’ve never paddled on the coast you wouldn’t know what beach sand is like and it’s ability to get anywhere and everywhere.

I just bought two tandems, and need to haul them in my DCSB. Interested to see how people stack them on one side of the bed. Do you lay the bottom one upside down, with the top upside down as well, or both right side up? I figured some foam blocks and ratchet straps should keep them secure.

I'm already planning on getting a bed extender for my hitch.

Depends on your boats but yes I usually stack them cockpit to cockpit. I have 10ft kayaks with W shaped hauls so they’re wider than the height of two stacked together. I therefor stack and strap them together on the ground and then load them on their side which leaves me about 55% of the bed for camping gear. If I need more space I do the same and close the tailgate so the kayaks are pointing up a bit but not over the height of the cab and that gives me some more space between the gate and the kayaks.

I should pull the truck into the back yard and try a few options. I have 2 - 12 footers, with a fairly wide beam, so they definitely don't fit side by side if I set them bottom side down (this is how I tried transporting them when I bought them). They're about 75 lbs a piece, so I'll probably try mounting one sideways first, then strap the 2nd to the first after I have it secured in the bed.

    Some pics of the kayaks.

I had built this for my kayaks last year. Its a giant drawer that I can pull out to put the kayaks in.

Here is the test build made from wood

Then I built it out of metal.

Here are some videos of how it works. Test platform followed by the metal one. I really need to finish it though, I never really figured out a good way to mount it to the bed, but I have since figured that out.

I installed the OEM roof rack. No drilling required and looks great IMO.
