I heard this recently as well. Also heard rumors someone went up and cut the lock off the gate and went up to the caves too.

Sounds like it’s gonna turn into a mess of people getting mad at each other over it.

Yup. It's a cool place but a stock truck won't make it through the cave, you COULD with skids and sliders. I think best idea right now is let it go - I'm sure the people going are the creme of the crop.

That said - sounds like they were trying to block it off for hiking too, not just driving, can only handle so many NY transients becoming your neighbors before you just snap

It will be a long term project. Mike has been talking with a few different people on the matter. But Mike, myself, and our club are also working on saving old Florida road at the moment.
Dorset is also harder for us being 2-2.5 hours away. Someone more local is working on it though it’s a hard one to save. Multiple ways in and total disregard from most of the locals will be hard to keep the town happy

In the short of it, DCR has been working on purchasing the land surrounding the road for a few years now. The last purchase included an easement to the property to the left of the entrance to install gates. Currently the gates are staying open. At the moment the biggest issue is people using the go arounds to bypass the first ledge and to the left of the entrance trespassing on private property. There are sediment runoff issues cause by it and will get the gates locked up in the future if it doesn’t stop. Right now we are working on getting the documentation dating back to the early 1900s or earlier stating it was in fact a legal right of way and was only discontinued for maintenance in 1931. Depending on if it’s a road or a trail determines a lot of the outcome.
