I need a new head unit and I'm trying to figure out what would be the best route to go here. I currently have the AAWireless adapter which has made me not want to use cords or mount my phone up again. It does however have some issues, or maybe it's just android auto wireless in general issues (that's what I'm really questioning here). The problem is the random skips (all apps) or just restarting in general. I pass by a utility/battery recycling center and a good half mile out it just freezes up completely and then doesn't restart until I'm a ways past it. It's annoying and I don't have these issues when on Bluetooth or when plugged in. It's made listening to audiobooks almost impossible because I'll go through random spots where it freezes/restarts/stops then fast forwards on the book.

So does this sound like standard android auto wireless stuff? If so I may look at the Bluetooth + Nav setup instead. I will admit I like the apps within android auto and I love using Google Maps.

If this is just the limits of the adapter and android auto wireless is pretty solid then I'm looking at the Pioneer 8600NEX or JVC KW-Z1000W unit, if that's just how android auto wireless is in general then I'll be going towards the Kenwood DNR1007XR. I like the larger screens, not a fan of the knob on the Kenwood but this unit seems to be one of the few floating screens with nav.

I’ll go ahead and tell you, built-in Nav sucks. I’ve got a pioneer flagship from a few years ago and even right out of the box, nav is slow and laggy and outdated. No amount of updates makes it useable when compared to Google maps or waze.
It’s there so if I ever get lost in some backwoods with no phone service to start a new route, I can use it to get back to civilization. But other than that, it stays unused

Thanks for that info, never had built-in Nav so didn't even realize that was a thing.

I have the non-Excelon version of that radio and I love it. Only difference between the two (as far as I can tell) is some adjustability. It's the closest to perfect I've ever come to perfect on a headunit. I have some small quibbles, but nothing that's even remotely a deal breaker. There's a long thread on the Excelon version somewhere here.

Edit: Sorry. Got a little confused on the part numbers. Get the one without the built-in navigation. As said above, built-in sucks. Using an app like Google Maps through Android Auto or Car Play is the way to go. Hands down.

No problem. If you have any questions about the functionality or features or whatever feel free to drop me a message. I could be mistaken, but I believe I'm using a few more of the features than the dudes in that thread.
