It’s be nice to find some of the other Barrell options for it but I haven’t been to worried about it. I haven’t shot it in years

The optic you know vs. the optic you don’t:

I know the ACOG in and out. Trained with it, been to war with it, dig the reticle.

Been variable-zoom-curious for who knows how many years now, considering trying out this 1-6 on a BCM AR build.

Big investment in a hobby that costs me money instead of making me money, don’t want to get it wrong. Anyone care to offer pros and cons to bounce around the ol’ noggin?

Rifle will be general use, training, target shooting (100-500 ish, same as Marine Corps days), walking the land/homestead, truck gun, varmint, defense, what have you. Mostly just target shooting and some cqb fun on our land in the country for fun.

I dig the idea of being able to have a 1x and a little more reach (6x) in one optic. I also dig the simplicity of a set 4x that I’m very familiar with and know well (and don’t ever have to adjust or learn anything new haha). I carried a variable optic on a Mk14 DM rifle for a bit but 99.9% of my 5.56 time is on an ACOG.

Stick with the familiar? Or there are good enough reasons to go to something new?

Are any of you guys aware of subsonic optimized wildcats?
Ideally looking for something in .224 or 6mm diameter with 150+grain projectiles, and fits in the standard AR magwell.

Essentially a High BC projectile with good weight that is subsonic.

High BC and subsonic is an oxymoron. Fun fact, BC is a derivative of bullet form factor and velocity.

6-6.5mm have. Good BC’s usually because they are long and skinny giving it a decent form factor, but at subsonic, brings the BC extremely low.

You’d be better off using a heavier bullet like in the .50 cal variety to maximize energy.

I reckon it’s a case of if you want to learn something new or do you want to maintain prior effectiveness. If you went through DM course at least through the MTU while I was there, then you should have learned the MRAD system. In which case, the learning curve should be rather smooth going to the razor in mils.

I’m not necessarily looking for maximizing energy, I’m looking to flatten trajectory, minimize velocity loss with a more aerodynamic profile, with more energy than subsonic .22 or sub .223.

I’d like to plug some numbers into a program to see what energy/trajectory changes we’re looking at vs a sub .223 or sub .308.

    I know you’re not.

What I’m saying is it doesn’t matter. BC is indicative of speed and form factor. Which is a dumb down way to explain it. The speed is fixed. See the ballistic chart with 3 different “high BC bullets.”

At the same subsonic speed, they ALL are dropping at 300y at around 31.25 moa. Period. The reason the .308 is about a moa better is a matter of momentum. The BC doesn’t matter to what you’re asking because it equals zero once it reaches subsonic. At which point it’s a constant rate of drop from gravity. Assuming stability.

Most people don’t realize BC changes throughout its flight, with the most dramatic effects taking place at transonic usually.

However energy is a matter of speed + mass. Since the speed is essentially fixed at subsonic, then the weight of a large bore, like my example of a heavy grained .50 will give you the “energy” increase you talk about. Plus the benefit of momentum.

Didn’t go through any course. Was just handed the rifle for about a month in country haha hey, you’re a good shot, carry this…

Thanks for the feedback. I have a bit to decide so I’ll keep going over it. I’m thinking I’d store the thing at 1x always as an index so when I pick it up I’m never surprised by what I see ha.

Good heaven’s all this talk about accuracy and ballistics. Hit the target where you should as often as you can is what counts. I don’t think I ever once daydreamed about trajectory of velocity when someone was shooting in my direction.

But maybe today’s GI’s are made of sterner stuff.

As much as I understand your sentiment, there are those who like to be self-defense minded, and then there are those who actually enjoy long range shooting just for fun. The latter tend to find enjoyment in the little things. Most people just live in their house or drive their car and don’t care, but others look for ways to optimize the efficiency or performance etc of various things. You may not enjoy studying ballistics, but for some people it’s fun, not stressful :)

When you start looking at taking shots at 1000 plus meters all that accuracy and ballistics come into play. Weight, barrel length, twist rate, humidity, even curvature of the earth. It is relaxing. you have to put everything else out of your mind and just focus on what you are doing right that moment.

    Working on that
The only time I’ve ever been concerned with a 1000+ meter shot was as a Tank Commander. I’ll not be messing with those distances with a rifle let alone a hand gun.
    But that’s just me
    But….more power to ya.
