Hey everyone, it’s been a while and I hope everyone is doing well. I recently took my truck into the mechanic and ended up with an estimate more then half the valuation of my truck. I was hoping I could get some direction from anyone who can point me in the right direction.

In the estimate it included that I need to have replaced
    Both sides LCA/UCA
    Right Cv axle shaft
    front left inner tie rod
    Bearing and assembly hub

I’m considering getting it up on a buddies lift and getting after it with my limited automotive knowledge/TW’s expansive tutorials or if it’s not even worth it. If anyone has any OEM parts on this list we could work out a price and/or point me in the best way to go about this I would appreciate it a ton.

Did you look over the truck yourself? Did the estimate include labor?

I imagine you can do all that yourself for less than $8k

Yes I’ve looked over it myself and the estimate does include labor. The wheel bearing definitely needs to be replaced and the assembly needs to be either repaired or replaced along with the tie rods and cv axle… still need to take a look at the control arms because it’s usually just the bushings not the arms themselves.

Definitely, I’m working on pricing it out right now but my trucks KBB right now is valued at roughly 3 thousand less than that so I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

KBB is only 5k on that? What, is it rusted into 5 pieces with no frame, engine knocks, and the suspension like a 1970s Cadillac with a whale in the trunk?

Hahaha thank you for that it’s been a rough day at work getting the estimate, definitely needed a laugh! It ain’t the prettiest but it’s a 2005 access cab with a 199,600 miles. Frame was replaced before I got it and engine/transmission are solid no repairs for the 6 years I’ve owned it.

At this point it seems like it’s not exactly a price thing, more of a “do you want to keep the truck on the road or replace it” kind of thing

That is really not a lot of parts or labor to replace. Assume both LCAs will need to be cut off due to rust so also factor in the price of new alignment bolts. Also, if you're doing anything on one side you should do it on both, so do inner and outer tie rods on both sides just to be done with it for another 100k miles.

That whole job is an honest afternoon of driveway wrenching. The UCA bolts are long so expect to beat back the sheetmetal a bit for clearance.

I look at vehicle replacement cost as opposed to "value" of the current vehicle. You do that work and you have a reliable truck for a fraction of what a different reliable truck would cost you.

Hit me up if you need any pointers, especially in you're in the Howell area. I've done very many horrible terrible no good things to my truck and at this point can (providing I'm working with my own tools) tear down the entire front end and drop the differential in about an hour.

And for the record, I follow the same advice I give. I'm currently rebuilding my 2010 Expedition with the hope of getting another 190k out of it. New control arms, tie rods, ball joints, axles, shocks, etc. all around. Hopefully I'll get my differentials back in the next day or two (regearing, LSD rear, Ox locker in the front) and will spend the weekend reassembling.

These projects can be a PITA but they're so gratifying once complete. :)

What's wrong with the cv axle? Kinda a strange thing to absolutely NEED to replace. I have an oem one that just needs a new inner boot it's yours if you want it
Hub assembly is easier to buy complete already pressed together and replace the whole thing
I wouldn't mind helping wrench if ya want
Even oem parts that's like $1200 max and maybe 10-12 tools to do it yourself. 80% of the bolts are a 19 mil hahah

Thank you so much for the advice I appreciate it more than you know, good luck with your project too!

Thank you for the response I sent you a dm about the axle but at least let me give you a little bit for it. As for wrenching on it I couldn’t ask for something like that, if I run into trouble I might reach out but I seriously appreciate the offer!

Anybody got some 16x7 not steel wheels they’re looking to get rid of? I’m in the middle of sanding a set of 2nd gen TRD OR wheels I got for free but seriously regretting the amount of work they need to be redone lol. I got some Toyos coming in tomorrow and I’d rather not put them on my steelies. Wouldn’t mind paying for a nice set
