I wonder if the Gen 3 is/will be as reliable as previous generations of Toyotas' I ask because a friend of mine said the 4runner and Tundra are made in Japan and are worthwhile paying more for if you want to hold onto them for a long time. I figured as many older Tacomas that I see that the nameplate alone means reliability..Any thoughts ?

probably not, "they dont build em like they used to"

shit I've seen more threads on 3rd gen drivetrain issues in the past year than i have on any other gen of tacoma.

Tundra's come off the same assembly line as Tacoma's in Texas, long term reliability will be fine.

Tundra's were originally built in Indiana but now in Texas.

Agreed, don't think l would be taking any advice from that friend when they can't even figure out where they are made.

Thanks, I had heard they (along with 4runner) were from over the pond. At any rate, thoughts on reliability (like getting 200,000 miles withot major repair would be my goal)

You cannot really determine long term reliability based on the short term opinions of a handful of not-so-random people on the internet.

I thought they moved Tacomas to Mexico?

That may make sense since they build more 3rd gens than any other. With those numbers increasing every year.

    OP, should be fine.
3rd gens have only been around for almost 6 years, where previous generations have been around for decades

I believe Pros were made in Texas at least through 2020 (and I think 2021 too).

My south-of-the-border built 3rd gen has never had issues, therefore I must conclude that it is the most reliable vehicle ever. Because thtatiscts

This is also incorrect. I'm not sure when they started the move, but the final model year of Texas-built Tacomas is 2021. It's been a mix from both plants for maybe a year or two, but this spring (April ish) the only USA Tacomas I saw on the dealer lot were SR5 Trail Editions (anecdotal data at best). Everything else had a VIN beginning with a 3, which includes my end-of-May-built TRD OR.

OP, it's no big deal. Think of most people you've seen around in your life, then think about how most of them own cars, and thus how well (or poorly) most cars are maintained. If you keep your fluids/brakes/tires fresh, and turn your stereo off to listen to the car every couple thousand miles, you should be just fine.

If you want a reason to fret, just remember how Chrysler and GM have been making thousands of "I buy American" vehicles in Mexico for decades :stirthepot:

It was not incorrect at all, starting in Model year 2022 they will all be made in Mexico.

(If you have the option) when purchasing the vehicles assembled in Japan would be the the best. Quality control top 3 locations are Japan #1, Canada #2, and USA #3. I wouldn't purchase anything assembled in any other location. Check the VIN...the first letter or number identifies the country. Japan is J, Canada is 2, and USA is 1, 4 or 5.

All of them yes, just saying that they started earlier than 2022! I'm pretty sure we agree, just trying to be clear for posterity haha.
