Certainly the biggest problem at hand is time and weight/size. For the everyday commute its fine, just plug your car in every night but not long distance travelling (250km+).

Solid state batteries are the answer to that problem, its lighter weight with higher energy density just not ready to be implemented in the market.

Here’s the way I see it for electric:

Pros: Fast, great acceleration, no emissions, probably better for city driving, usually have great technology or features, less moving parts so less likely to break something, regenerative braking so less brake wear.

Cons: Initial vehicle price, amount of time it takes to charge, environmental issues regarding manufacturing and disposal of the lithium batteries, rural and low income areas may not see charging stations for a while, very heavy vehicles, and not having an emergency source of energy (like having a jerry can)

Maybe those solid state batteries are a good solution for some of the problems above.

For me anyways, pros don’t outweigh the cons.

my only thing about ev tech is the infrastructure and the sustainability.

something obviously has to be done with the way the environment is being treated. However, replacing one non renewable energy with one that requires many resources (lithium and prescious metals and what not) that harm the earth just as much plus not having the renewable infrastructure to support it.

It is a step in the right direction and hopefully it gets sorted without people having to line their pockets (from oil to something else for instance…).

I mean even a nissan leaf has a 200km range (240km advertised, lowered cause we know thats a lie just like MPG). so you can do a couple days commute without charging (granted your commute isn't 100km).

also slightly lower maintenance costs (no oil changes), and there are gov. subsidies for EVs to reduce costs but I think its only a few thousand now.

You raise a point with manufacturing, EVs are pretty bad on initial manufacturing compared to gas vehicles, it takes quite a bit of time to make those emissions back through the life of the vehicle.

There are some companies coming out that do lithium recycling, It's been awhile since I've looked it up so I'm not sure where it's at.

Absolutely right sir, there's always going to be someone lining their pockets, in time we'll go from BP oil spills in the ocean to ABC Company dumping Lithium batteries into the ocean (or something like that).

The Santa Cruz is quicker than a Tacoma and probably every other midsize pick up on the market today.

The electric talk reminded me of Can-am’s electric plans.... Electric go kart imagine how fast they could be and they would have enough weight to handle great on the corners.

Their electric jet ski idea scares me though, water + electricity...

jk lol I can do this all day :typing:

Love the idea of electric recreational vehicles, It would be interesting to see the seadoo with all the electric torque! ELECTRIFY ALL THINGS.

I wouldn't worry too much about the water and batteries thing, people have been doing it for years on a smaller scale, like those scuba things.

Imagine not being burnt by the go kart exhaust thats right behind your arm...

Electric boats are becoming a thing too (the ugly X shore mainly)

Also there is a canadian company - Kraken Robotics - who have patented subsea batteries that are pressure tolerant, the future is looking good :woot:

Can't argue with those nubers. I still think the Santa Cruz would be faster on the road.

on top of infrastructure and sustainability, we're fortunate to have hydro power as a possible option of generation with almost a constant flow of power (to the point where we sell it to the US...) Other cities? not so much.

With that said, EV charging can be a major strain on the systems (at least it will be 10-15 years down the line if we don't update it, wh) and when you look at oil/gas/coal/other power plants in Canada (which makes up 25%) we will also be bringing up the low points from the demand curves (base load/off hour generation) to compensate for charging over night. Sure it flattens the curve of the demand, which allows for a more demand for consistent power generation (by proxy of not needing to shut off the machines), but we will eventually need to invest in higher wattage power plants to compensate, which will probably mean more NPPs or something. for land-locked states which run mostly coal - more coal gets tossed into the flame and blah blah blah polluting the air (real issue isn't consumers in pick up trucks and cars, it's the shipping industry around the world which causes basically all of it which no one talks about because hitting them means hitting people's pocket change.)

but yeah, power surges and issues might be a thing but this might be more apparent 10-15 years down the line once the "gas car sales" ban goes into full effect if we're not prepared for it.

Electric gokarts are something i can get on board with as well as electric dirtbikes/ atv’s(racers not utility). Would open up a ton of riding areas since there wouldnt be any noise problems and arent generally rode long distance
Anything else long distance wise im not a fan of. Wont catch me riding an electric snowmobile any time soon as sometimes its hard enough just to find a station that sells premium fuel.

Has anyone had this happen to them yet?
I disconnected my battery cause I had to do something. When I connected it back, it now says my truck can go 560km instead of 430km when I fill up to full.
Does this mean that 0 is now a true 0 and I can't drive into the negatives anymore or is this 560 now a false number?

The range is based on past driving history. When you clear the memory, the trip computer estimates range based on some default mpg figure that's probably too high for your driving conditions.
