The thing is new Tacomas have never been subject to much in the way of discounts, so even if they hold the price to MSRP and you then get top dollar for your trade, it could be a good time to get rid of a mechanically troublesome truck. And there is only 3 years left on the extended warranty.

 

I saw a tranny flash once...weirded me the fuck out.

 

I was going to give the above post a "like" but it felt too weird.

Um, It means if a transgendered person exposed their private parts to you it would be a weird experience.

Or it could also mean that watching someone flash a transmission is a weird experience.

Take your pick.

 

It just meant they find a tow service and take care of the bill for the tow, had i known they were incapable of taking down a simple address...4x, I would have just called myself.

 

Talked to the service rep, he said if he had seen the after market CAI.... it would NOT have been covered.

Still unsure why it happened. Is this common, is there routine cleaning of the TB that should be done?

 

OK, after reading through the thread when I see things like vTune mentioned and now aftermarket CAI... I wonder what else has been modified and could relate to the issues? Maybe nothing more. I know many of us mod our trucks, it's fun, but those mods can have consequences too. We can't expect Toyota to blanket warranty everything, right? We have to be fair and be somewhat understanding. "No love for dealers here either".

However, Toyota has to stand behind their trucks too. Mods to a CAI won't cause frame rust for example.

Its great that you posted the issue and came back with info on the fix. This is what makes this forum great. I know you weren't complaining about the warranty but just stating it was covered this time but maybe it might not have been, you might have gotten lucky.

Depending on your conditions, you may have to clean your TB more frequently. Air Filter changes or washing, make sure your seal is good. Did you notice any signs of your TB going bad? (i.e. rough idle esp after hot, stumbling, hesitation, stalling, etc...)
Do you have a (ducking) catch can? Not emptied?
Any other mod?

For me, I always use an OBDII w/an app called Torque and monitor the engines vitals as driving. I want to be "in-tune" with things and notice when things are irregular. Monitor trans temp, coolant, rpm (steady or not rpms), throttle pos, etc... It has a ton of live data. Not that this would have prevented your issue but it could help diagnose changes.

Service reps are a trip all the ones I've dealt with since getting my truck own a Tacoma as well... supposedly

Right. Toyota warranties the truck they built, not the mods. So sometimes its tricky .

 

never an issue till now. I've always just cleaned them when the carbon is built up and I'm good to go. I was surprised because of "buildup" the just replace it... maybe this one is a pain in the ass to clean?

I was lucky on the coverage and wouldn't have had an issue at all if it was not being covered when it's been tuned and a 3rd party CAI attached to it.

Conditions - highway driving, never been off road or hell, even on a dirt road yet.

They said that if the parts that had to be repaired or replaced were not covered under the warranty then I would have had to pay.
In my case they were covered under the warranty so the rental fees were removed.

Mine is a 17' apparently under the extended warranty and not everything is covered like when it's the first year.

 

Makes one wonder how all these mechanically troublesome tacomas i keep reading about here haven't driven down trade in prices. You'd think there must be a huge demand for stupid buyers.

Catch can is on the other end. For an eli5, there's a suck side and a blow side. The catch can goes on the "blow" side the "suck" side is the one in front of the throttle body. But yeah, I run a catch can lol.

 

Regardless of make, people with car problems seek out car forums far more often than people with trouble free cars, so the percentage of problems on the internet are skewed.
