Where are you reading that? Some Subarus have always been made in Japan (Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, STI and BRZ). If they are domestic now it is a recent addition.

I would put the reliability of my three Tacomas (USA) up against my wife's three Foresters (JAPAN) any day.

I'm sure they are built in both places but they have been building them here since 1989.
    https://www.torquenews.com/1084/subaru-you-drive-made-america

"Subaru of America is the Japanese automaker’s largest market by far selling 671,000 vehicles of its total 1.06 million worldwide. Since beginning production in 1989, the U.S. plant has increased its output from 67,000 to approximately 370,000 Subaru vehicles annually. SIA makes about 35 percent of the total number of vehicles the Japanese automaker sells globally."

According to this Article it looks like the Subaru models built here are the Outback, Legacy and Impreza.

Your idea of "trouble free" and mine may be different.

Both are 2010 Forresters both have 175K. Both of them have had nothing but timing belts, oil changes, and tires (regular maintenance) I spent a few hundred on both of them around 125K and preemptively did headgasket jobs on both of them, neither were urgent or required.

We did have a 98 Outback that one of the kids ran up to 140K until they decided to have their first accident and totaled it, That car needed timing belts, oil, tires and I did put 1 alternator on it that took about 15 minutes to swap.

My 1st gen had over 200k on it and I didn't even do head gaskets that weren't required. US Tacoma wins.

Oh, I've got more mileage than that on the Toyotas, I wasn't aware it was a contest, When it comes to toyota vehicles, I believe hands down the Japanese built Toyotas especially the 4 runner and the Land Cruiser have some of the best overall reliablity,

Although, there is a Subaru that went 1.7 million miles

Its interesting when you look at the list of some of the million mile cars, there is a fair number of German cars on the list, and of course Dodge, Ford and Chevy each have a truck as well as toyota.

Just highlighting the myth of geographic location creating superior quality. In this case the myth that all autos built in Japan have greater reliability.

I think it is fair to say that Japanese Car companies build cars that have greater reliability than their counterparts. I guess the question should be, why can't the US owned auto companies not seem to build cars with greater reliability if the Japanese car companies are building them with the same labor force/pool.

Honda, Subaru, Toyota and Nissan all build cars in the US. And arguably if you put those together you would have greater overall reliability across the board than Ford/GMC/(whoever Dodge/Ram/Jeep are calling themselves at that moment.

It has to do some with manufacturing ethic and stop the line authority for act issues. It also has to do with using proven technology and being slow to adopt and change things in vehicle design and technology biasing for not fixing what is not broke.

Was it seriously the 4th page before crippling frame rust made an appearance in this thread?
So... an oil change and tire rotation at the dealership after ToyotaCare ends?

No everything was built better generations ago. The materials used in manufacturing were better. Toyota could build a 1st generation Tacoma today, and it would last as long as one built when they were in production.

I had a 2004 Colorado before my Tacoma and its drivetrain lasted me a reliable 175k before I traded it. It was the frame rot and suspension that killed it.

I've been driving in the woods for work for 20 years. #1 reliability is toyota. If I had to buy something else I'd try nissan or jeep. I will not buy GM, Ford, Dodge.

    I’ve got ~85k on my 2017.

it’s been good but not true to Toyota form. I had a $1500 oil leak from a faulty seal at 50k miles. Otherwise she has been good!

Toyota does their best to implement, measure, fix, and manufacture their products to the best of their ability no matter where it is built. Sure, Japanese people may have higher honor towards their job than other countries, however, much of the process is automated. Their designs have longevity in mind. I have a 2009 camry that is not a great car, but it still has 120k without many repairs, and even Toyota contacted me to replace the piston rings at 85k(because of a defect)...not many other mfg's would have done that. I couldn't get Ford to fix something under warranty with very few miles on it...said it was normal for the truck...Toyota is just better.

Change fluids regularly, drive it reasonably, keep it clean and it will last longer than most cars.
