Are 10 ply Duratrac's too much tire?

A guy locally is selling some brand new 10 ply 265/70-17 Duratrac's for almost half the price of new. I was gonna get the c load ones, but for the price would the 10 ply ones not work?

 

they will be fine, you dont have to run the rated psi in them, i have 10 ply kelly safari tsr's, i only rin 40psi in them.

 

No reason not to get them, especially for half price. Jump on it!

 

I'll give you two reasons why it would be retarded to run 10 ply.


1.) Your ride will be like a dump truck
2.) Your MPG will drop significantly

I have 265/70/17 10 ply Hankook Dynapro M/T's , in all honesty the next time I buy tires I will probably get AT's , but my truck does not ride like a dump truck , and I average 18 MPG .

You have no idea what you're talking about. I am currently running 10 ply E load 18" Duratracs and experience neither. The tires do not ride harsh and I'm still getting 18 MPG on 32's.

 

Going to a 10 ply load E rate tire will produce a harsher ride and will reduce your MPG. That is 100% FACT.

Have ever actually weighed a load E rated tire? So unless you can prove otherwise that somehow Load E tires are magically made of some new light weight synthetic rubber and weigh less than a load C than I'd say you have no idea what you're talking about.

The average E rated tire was designed to handle about 3,000-3,5000 lbs. PER tire. Something our little Tacomas couldn't even handle. You do realize that tires like that were designed for trucks like half tons and F-250s right? So as I've said before why you would willingly buy and E rated tire unless you had no other possible choice is beyond me.

 

x2! But the reason you'd buy a tire that heavy for a truck our size is for off-roading. The heavier tire has a thicker sidewall and would be much harder to puncture. Otherwise, for road use, I couldn't agree more.

 

My truck is on 10 ply Hankook MT's and it doesn't ride like a dump truck , as you put it .

That is not 100% fact actually. Do you not realize they make different compounds of rubber? Have you ever owned Duratracs? Do you have any idea how soft they are? Have you ever worked in the tire industry? If not, you probably also don't realize that full size truck owners constantly complain of 10 ply Duratracs producing a soft squishy ride.

And yes, I have weighed them actually, and I can answer yes to all of the above.

 

I had the same problem, 10ply Toyo M/T 285/75/16. Thought about it 5 min too long and they were sold. lasted 15 min on kijiji

 

1.) Of course they make different kinds of rubber compounds that's what sets most of the tires apart besides the actual structure and tread design which is the compounds they are composed of.

2.) Do I own Duratracs? No I have BFG A/T KOs. That's of no significance. A 10 ply Load E rated tire is a 10 ply Load E rated tire.

3.)Yes as a matter fact I do I worked at a Tire dealer in Houston for 4 years, than moved on to my career in another field.

4.)I am aware of full size truck owners complaining about the squishy ride and also "highway wondering." I am also aware that common sense tells me that most of these full size trucks probably weigh in excess of 6,000 lbs. empty with no load. Not to mention most of these guys will probably be loading equipment in the back and maybe even pulling a fully loaded trailer with a Bobcat in addition to that.

 

I know this is a really old thread, but this is one of the first things that came up when I Googled "Tacoma 10 Ply Tires", so I know it's still of reference to some people.

I recently went through this myself. When I first got my truck I put Bilstein 5100s on it with a 1" block in the back. The front was set to the 4th notch with stock coils. I also added Mickey Thompson ATZ LT rated 10 ply tires. I would have to agree with previous posts that it rode like crap. The first thing I attributed this to was the Bilsteins being set so high. So I bought the OME 884 coils and dropped my 5100 to the 0" setting. There was no difference. Then I decided to pull the trigger on a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3 tires. Got them installed today and holy crap, NIGHT and DAY! The truck rides and drives sooooo much better.

I had those exact tires. For reference C load are impossible to find, so even if you did go with them you would be SOL with a flat tire.

 

I've been running DuraTrac E Load 265/75r16s for about 7,000 miles now at 38psi. They actually ride quite well, but I did drop about 1 mpg with fuel mileage though.
