Just reading around and saw this thread and wanted to jump in. I was recently (even this morning) discussing this topic in:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/kdmax-6-0-for-towing.732685/

I have 33" tires, 2.5" lift, and camper shell on '20 DCORLB with KDM6 tune. My mileage is shit compared to most folks here, 16 at best, usually not even that good. I drive responsibly and never exceed the limit by more than a few. Here's a random snapshot from this morning...

Question becomes why are these trucks getting fuel mileage all over the place? I could see driving habits having an effect but not that great.

    How the person drives?
    The fuel type being used?
    Empty bed?
    Size of tires?
    Engine type?

    Not necessarily in that order.

Top tier 87 octane usually Costco when I can. 21.5 mpg per tank with mixed back roads, highway high speed interstate (75-80mph) and urban congested interstate. with very short 4wheel drive uses on job sites.
I have been tracking every tank for a while my general grabber AT tires(stock size) installed 20 k ago impacted mileage by half a point. Otherwise all is good loving my truck with 61k

I live in the mountains. You might think an equivalent amount of downhill would cancel out the uphill, but that doesn't pan out.
I'm rolling a stock truck on stock size Ridge Grapplers @ 28PSI.
Only weight in the truck is me, maybe ten pounds of recovery gear and a chain saw.

    I never see over 16mpg.

I reported the mileage I got on another mpg thread. I used 87 octane where it was available and, I think, it was 86 in Colorado. Got decent mileage (23.6) on the trip despite the tires being underinflated and heavier oil in the crankcase.

FWIW, my calculations say the indicated mileage is a little bit lower than the calculated mpgs.

Natural gas for the home. Propane gas for camping.

Now for gasoline in the vehicles, 87 octane from Costco, Safeway or Arco works well.A390E145-DA55-4D6F-B425-8B3EA8938D4F.jpg

Mid grade (89). Higher octane fuel does not contain more energy potential, but if you’re detonating, your losing power and damaging the engine. You can’t always hear detonation. 89 is just a little more insurance against detonation, especially if I am hauling some weight. If I were towing a significant load I would fill it with 91. The cost increase is minimal, about 4 dollars more per tank to go to mid grade and six to go to premium. The more gas costs, the less significant the price jump between grades is as it becomes a smaller percentage of the per gallon cost.
I get 19 city and 23-24 highway depending on the drive. Mammoth to Alta Loma a few weeks ago I got 26+ for the trip. Weight, driving style, and traffic make the most difference. The tacoma got decent mileage and no hints of detonation even when climbing grades like Tioga Pass which tops out just under 10,000 feet and has an 8% grade in some places.

How many here drive around with a bed full of heavy items all the time?
I've never seen where fuel plays the much difference in fuel milage either.....if it does something isn't right.
Yeah, i can see really big heavy tires having a huge effect, but are there that many here with them?
I'm assuming the majority of these trucks are the 3.5 engine so there shouldn't be much difference.
I agree the way someone drives or uses their truck could have the biggest effect, i guess in some cases it may be a combination of all these factors.

After checking the top tier site it looks like.most of the places I gas up are top tier anyway. Good to know.

Costco is top tier and they add their additives on site at each gas station. They are not mixed in at the refinery like most others do.

By me 93 is about a dollar more a gallon than 87. So a pretty decent jump for a full tank.

    Cooooollll, another fuel thread.

    Myths:
    High octane makes more power.
High octane makes better fuel mileage
    E10 will destroy the engine
E10 will rust the fuel system
    E10 has 10% less energy

    Truths:
High octane only helps prevent pre-detonation or ping
100s of 1000s vehicle run E10 with no issues.
Since about 1980's engines and fuel systems are built to run E10
E10 has about 97% of the energy as gasoline only. About a 3% reduction in energy/gallon

Truth: I've been burning E10 since my first car in 1976. My car was a clapped out 1963 Buick Skylark. I ran E10 because it was affordable on my high school budget. The 1963 car wasn't built for E10, it never had issues with fuel. Although.....it had plenty of other quirks.

I burn E10 (87 octane rating) in my '06 4.0L V-6 to get 19-20 mpg running 70 mph on the Interstate. Mixed it falls to 17-19 mpg.

    Shits weird...
At certain speeds, I can watch the real-time mpg shoot up to max. From about 80% in S5 to 100% S4, even though it's taching higher. I think it's a matter of being in full tc lock in 4th and flex lock in 5th.

I use Chevron 87 Octane 95% of the time, the remainder is whatever brand is available when I need to fill up, but always 87 Octane if available. After 67K total miles, you can see my average fuel economy as calculated by hand using the Fuelly app on my phone.

I have never trusted the built in calculation on any vehicle I have owned, because it has no way to really measure fuel usage with any level of accuracy. Whereas gas pumps in every state in the US are, by law, tested for very high accuracy on at least an annual basis. Of course if the odometer on the vehicle is not highly accurate, even manual MPG calculation will not be accurate, either.

Mods too, some carry in excess of 800lbs in armor, 33" to 35" tires...:goingcrazy:then they say that they get shitty mileage :notsure:. I will stay stock for the most part, will have a cap once if ever arrives...(RSI EvoA Adventure)...otherwise stock, ok I added Timbren front and back but that's about it for me.
