Remove gas tank prior to siphoning?

    Hey there!

I'm replacing the fuel pump on my 97 Tacoma.

Step one siphoning gas isn't working. I have pump suspect the diameter of the tube is too narrow/to thick(?).

    Maybe not getting enough suction.

I also used my mouth (gross) but no go. And blew into the tank with a separate (but same diameter) tube. To create flow.

What are the implications of remocing the gas tank before siphoning? If this is possible?

    Liz

I would get a siphon that doesn't require the use of your mouth. Gasoline is hazardous to us, and it tastes awful! They sell them at auto parts or hardware stores.

The gas tank has anti siphon protection. This is why you can’t stick a tube through the filler neck.

So it’s actually really easy to remove the bed and it makes servicing the tank 100x easier. Advantage is you don’t need to drop the tank at all. You can change the pump with a full tank still bolted to the frame. I did it by myself with an engine hoist. I’ve also done it by lifting the bed off with three people.

If the pump in the tank will still pump you can jump out the circuit opening relay and connect your hose to it to pump the tank out, that's how I do it at the shop if the pump still runs.

Siphon tube won't get by the Roll over valve at top of tank, bottom of filler neck.

I have gotten a tube to the bottom of numerous 1st gen tanks, 99 and prior. There were no obstructions. It took a good bit of finesse to get thru the turns, mostly twisting/pushing the tube when it felt like it was hung up. I found cutting the end of the tube at a 45° angle really helped. If the "point" snagged, a bit of twisting would allow the slanted side to ride past.
The 03 FSM only shows a "cut off valve" in the evap connection assembly.

Once down to 1-2 gals, lower it down on a jack. Once again there is finesse to it. When you think the jack is at the "balance point" and lower away, it becomes apparent how much the remaining fuel will throw things off when it sloshes to one end. Be aware of that, keep it level and plan your moves.
A transmission jack would shine here.

No drain bolt on the tank? My 84 had one.

Not on Tacos, had one on an 81 and 83. Real handy for draining the water that settles out out of Pemex.

Brilliant guys thanks for all this. I'm about 3/4 way removing the tank.

There's no drain bolt for the tank. I replaced my tank last winter, and created an album of the pictures I took during the process, you might find them helpful:

You might consider replacing the rubber gaskets and evap hoses while you're in there. They don't cost very much and can help you avoid any future evap related CELs.

If you decide against pulling the bed, this youtube video does a good job showing how to disconnect everything from underneath.

Thanks mate<3 will look into these soon. Been a job ^-^

I am stuck removing the fuel line. The bolts are difficult af.

Any one have any idea. I've put wd 40 on them. I removed the fuse to de pressurize it.

I didn't siphon the gas. Is it likely that the gas is pressurizing the bolts? About half a tank in

Gas not pressurizing the bolts. If you didn’t remove the bed then it is difficult to get a good grip on the bolts. Keep soaking with wd40 (I prefer Deep Creep) and they should eventually come loose.

I removed my tank to replace it from the bottom. That was such a pita that I pulled the bed to install the new tank. Everything is right in front of you for getting at the connections.
