OEM battery went to 5 years 8 months

I bought my replacement at Walmart. So far it’s lasted longer than than my OEM one. Got about a year out of that one

I’ve done a fair amount of studying batteries and what makes them last and die. With pure lead acid batteries 2 things reduce its life. Heat and sulfation. You can’t do much about the heat. An engine bay is a horrible place to have a battery. Sulfation starts the minute the battery has less than 100% state of charge. Batteries with thicker plates like marine and deep cycle resist sulfation. If you run a starting battery dead you just killed a major percentage of life. Starting batteries should not be used to run accessories by themselves. Marine batteries can some what and deep cycle a lot more. Marine batteries are a compromise between starting and deep cycle. Even deep cycle batteries should never go less than 60% discharge without damage. Starting batteries with their thin plates can dump a lot of amperage fast for starting an engine but are typically full charged by the alternator about 10 min later. A deep cycle will last much longer in your car but may not dump enough amperage to start in cooler weather. All lead acid batteries do better with less discharge and constant trickle charging. Modern cars discharge batteries all the time. My deep cycle Trojan battery for my trolling motor is 15 years old and still runs like a champ. I charge it as soon as I get home and keep it on a battery tender in my cool basement.

My point is that the OEM battery is just about as good as you can get. Take a volt meter with you to get the freshest one and piss off the auto part store. The one that’s been sitting on the shelf discharging on its own ( they all do) has a lot less life.

Ha! I bought one a few months ago bc I can't leave noco in the hot truck down here in the summer. But I wasn't sure if they would work. I'm about to buy a new battery anyway bc I'm taking the family to see remote spots in UT and CO and don't need to bother with a dead battery. My bros OEM Tacoma battery died about this time so I figure better safe in this case. Good to know the autowits worked for you though.

 

Today it finally happened. 5 years 5 months and 9 days from the time I took ownership of my 16. She just gave up this morning and said she was done. I used my jump box to get her started then headed to wally world. All they had in stock was the agm so now I have to get mine tuned again to include the agm so it charges correctly. It lasted longer than I expected but I knew the day was near.

 

I’m confused here. If the OEM lasted 5 years why replace it with something more expensive and may not last that long. It just doesn’t add up.

Your confusion likely comes for your ignorance in battery prices..no offense. How much do you think a Deka battery costs or how much a Trustart costs?

It's actually less. It's also less than every other run of the mill Johnson Controls battery at Advanced, Autozone, Napa etc

EDIT: Funny enough my battery finally died and I just replaced in a week or so ago. Could have been age or lack of use.
