Any major brand like shell or mobil should be. I think gulf is one that isn't.

I stay with Top Tier rated gas stations, 87 octane and I get 23-25 mpg city/highway. V6. 2wd with tonneau (I think it helps with mpg).

I've been doing an experiment the past 3 fill-ups of specifically using 100% non-ethanol gas. There's a pretty helpful app on the iPhone called Pure Gas that has user complied data of all non-ethanol stations/pumps near you and what octane is available. I've found non-ethanol 90 octane pumps for the last few fill-ups and it *seems* it helps highway mileage a bit; I'm talking 1-2mpg at most. My truck does have the subtle TRD Lift so that certainly doesn't improve the mileage. Steady cruise control on a mostly level highway at 65mph can yield 23 to almost 24mpg (mine is a manual transmission) but once you hit 70mph it plummets to sub-20. We took a trip to Asheville, NC last weekend and on I-40 at 70mph in 4th and 5th gear with the mountains I got 17.2mpg. God help those of you that drive 75-80mph......

I’ve pushed mine almost to 80 mph…don’t think I’ll ever have enough juice to go back in time

One thing I found is my truck likes 70 MPH with it ECT mode. It seems to drop into 5th or 4th sooner losing less kinetic energy and needing to push the engine less. Most of the time I’ll leave it in cruise @70 and it seems to climb minor grades with little effort. For big grades, I pull it out of cruise and climb it at a modest pace manually shifting it. It will pull most grades @70, but will use a lot more gas. Ironically, at a time when I don’t care much about the cost of a tank of gas, I watch my mileage more than I did when I was younger. Old man priorities I guess.

I don't understand this ECT mode being used by some when not hauling anything heavy. If i put it on in my truck, i get more engine drone, and way worse fuel economy. Gotta believe some of its due to really prolonged shifting points that don't even feel normal. Otherwise the truck drives normal when in the D mode.

I use the cheapest gas I can find & get 17 to 18 mpg like clockwork if I'm really standing on the loud peddle it can get as bad as 14 that's doing 85mph

I think it’s subjective and how well it works may vary depending on driving style and how your trans operates from the factory.
For me, I like the shift points. It’s a little closer to how I would drive it if it were a manual. I feel the truck is more responsive with light throttle whereas out of ECT, I feel it has a tendency to fall on its face due to short shifting. On a flat road, it seems fine, but with a little grade it is less than optimal for me. One thing I really hate, has been when I needed to suddenly hit the throttle to get out of the way and the truck will fall flat in really a dangerous way, then drop two gears and tach out the engine. In ECT, a small amount of throttle will cause it to drop a gear and accelerate properly. I feel the response is safer, and makes driving easier.
Going back to what I wrote earlier, when driving on the freeway, ECT down shifts it quicker and before the truck loses much kinetic energy which keeps it going at the speed I want. Out of ECT, it feels like it’s slowing quite a bit, then dropping two gears and applying more throttle than it would otherwise.
I live in a hillside community, where the streets can be steep, so it’s much better when going up the hill. It works well for my purposes, my driving style, and however my truck is programmed to shift. It may not be optimum for another driver or different truck.
I am aware of the TSB regarding reprogramming the shift pattern, however, when I took the truck in for the fuel pump recall, the service writer told me there would be a $140 diagnostic charge if the tech didn’t find the reprogramming necessary. He went on to say it is almost never necessary and they have even had one make the trans shift worse. He really was trying to discourage me in every way, so I let it go.
As far as the drone, I think it’s a preference. I like to hear the engine a little. I have considered getting the TRD exhaust and air box so I can hear the engine a little without it being too loud. My last truck was a Ram with lots of fun stuff in the engine and the usual intake/exhaust, and big tires. Lots of engine and road noise. Comparatively, the Tacoma is silent. Different expectations and past driving experiences. I’ve heard others say the Tacoma cabin is noisy. For me it’s quiet. I do like some engine sound feedback, so the ECT choice works for me.
    Just one guy’s 2 cents.

I'd be finding out why your transmission shifts like that when in drive. I've had toyota pickup automatics since 86, and all shifted normal like any domestic vehicle. Imo, the toyota engines were gutless during those times until my 4.7 gen1 tundra. My 2020 tacoma automatic feels the same as that tundra with the same rpm till 5th gear in the tacoma. Thats where its nice to have the tacoma's more overdrive ability.

I think the short-shifting thing is pretty common. I think I read Toyota has sorted it out a little, and possibly the TSB for it would solve the problem, but the service writer was all but assuring me I would end up paying the diagnostic fee. It really seems like a shift paradigm designed for best mileage on a flat road, at a constant speed, which would be true.
I may revisit the TSB later.

I think my recent experiences mirror your results…. I just got back from Pinehurst NC and I used non-ethanol fuel as well as high octane and 87 octane. The pure gas helped a bit and I did notice the engine sounded better didn’t sound as much like a diesel. But the speed was the biggest factor in fuel mileage. At 70+ mph the fuel gauge fell pretty quickly.

Agreed and, well said. When I test drove a '20 w/auto the dealer guy was in the back seat. I went through the parking lot and turned into traffic to start my test drive. In less than a block I said, "what's wrong with this thing?" because it felt like half the cylinders quit firing. And he immediately said, "poke that little button with ECT on it" and it drove normal-ish after that. So, i have referred to it as the "second start button" like a lot of others. Eventually, got the KDM6 tune and that helped a ton and I haven't used the ECT since. Mostly because if I do I'm afraid I'll like it too much and start using every time I drive it again and I really don't like having to push the other button. NO, it's not too much trouble, it's the principle of the thing: it seems unnecessarily stupid. I'm old and cars are WAY better than they were when I started driving in the late '70's but, they're not perfect either.

I use 87 Octane and no shit I get 25-28 mpg and that is keeping her at 50 mph our gallons are bigger here in Canada. I drive mostly highways as I live in the country far from most big cities.
