Lots of milky condensation in oil cap and filler neck

I had similar looking gunk under my oil cap. It was darker and smelled "burnt".

Truck has about 27K on it

 

The insulation is working, except for the filler cap. But I am using one of those metal TRD caps. Other then the cap the filler tub appears to be mostly clean. Obviously the plastic filler tube is not warming up on short trips.

I was thinking of just buying a peace of foam pipe insulation and cutting it and placeing it over the fill neck

I have seen similar foam used on a/c pipe

 

Yeah, I don't think the stuff will just burn off on it's own. You'll have to periodically clean it and just run the truck long enough to evaporate the remaining moisture. I posted a pic of my cap over on the Pacific Northwest S2000 forum and apparently it's not uncommon. A couple of them work on cars for a living and see it often.

I'm glad I found this because I just looked at mine today and almost freaked out! I had about half the amount as the picture shows. I live in Kansas and it has been cold for the last several months. I guess I am glad to know this happens to about everyone in this type of climate. I have just never seen this before.

 

Well now I know why I have this junk...truck came from northern New york to Fairbanks, AK...and now its on Kodiak Island, AK. Looks like I'll be changing the oil more often since I drive only 7 miles to work and there's what...60 miles of paved road here? Ugh, can't wait to move back to the real America! lol

 

This is my second time changing the oil on my truck. The first time, the cap looked fine. The second time, the cap looked like this:


I've been using Mobil 1

 

I wish a company would come out with a metal filler neck for our trucks...

Problem would be solved,I use Mobil 1 and I get the same gunk in my neck

 

I do drive a lot of short trips. But this whole situation doesnt seem right. I never had this issue on previous vehicles.

 

send your next oil change oil off to blackstone to get it analyzed if you are worried about anything. the report will tell you how much water is in there, how much anti-freeze, what there should be and a ton of other things. most importantly it'll tell you if you are changing your oil too early.

every vehicle i own gets a blackstone report because more often than not the good oil i use (redline) doesn't need to be changed nearly as often as you'd think.

 

i found a metal oil filler from a 4.7 tundra engine on ebay for 20$ it appears to be the same base as our plastic ones and the same height but just havent had the time to swap them out.

 

I tend to doubt it would help...because metal conducts heat so much better it would cool after shut down faster and then the moisture would condense sooner inside the tube. I think the plastic one, being not so conductive, won't.

But it will be interesting to see how it works for you...

What I thought...about the cost of an oil change...LOL.

haha, i know what you mean. but the report might tell you that the oil is fine and you can have 10k change intervals or something. it's very possible. i've seen reports on the oil forums where people can go 18-20k on their oil without any issue whatsoever, as per the oil reports. either way it'll confirm your oil quality and give you peace of mind.

 

I see this thread was started almost a year ago... but since its been revived I'll throw in my experience as well. I just changed my oil last night and have the same exact yellowish gunk under the cap, however the oil I drained out of it looked fine (black, but not milky). My mechanic friends said it was most likely just condensation and since the coolent level was fine it probably wasnt that. So I'm going to throw out there that this is a common Toyota thing. oh yeah, my truck is a 07 with 50k miles on it.

 

It is indeed...and I do know just what you are talking about. I already do 10k OCI's with Mobil1, i'm not interested in spending $25 to see if it might get a few thousand more...and then again..and again. Spending what 50, 75...100???? to save one $30 oil change? doesn't sound very economical.

10K is considered very safe by many mfr's now, when using quality synthetic oils formulated for it. I got used to it with my VW before I traded for the Tacoma and found it super convenient. I've been doing it with my Maxima for a long time...it's got 110k on it now. I also know that the Camry 2011 manual also allows 10k OCI's.

 

and of course, you have plenty of objective evidence to support that claim...
