ROUTINE SUMMER WEATHER: Alabama’s weather won’t change much through Friday, as an upper ridge stays over the region. Partly sunny, hot, humid days with random, scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis. Highs will be in the low 90s, and the chance of any one spot getting wet is 35-45 percent. Just what you expect in mid-August.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Not much change is expected… highs 88-91 Saturday and Sunday with a mix sun and clouds both days. Scattered showers and storms will be around, generally between 12:00 noon and 10:00 p.m. There could be an increase in rain activity across Southeast Alabama by Sunday afternoon and Sunday night as Tropical Storm Fred approaches the eastern Florida Panhandle.

NEXT WEEK: The rain coverage on Monday and Tuesday will depend on the behavior of the tropical system. But there is clearly a chance deeper tropical moisture could be in place on these two days with a high coverage of showers and storms… then typical summer weather is likely Wednesday through Friday with a partly sunny sky and “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Highs will be mostly in the mid to upper 80s through the week… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FRED: Potential Tropical Cyclone Six was upgraded to Tropical Storm Fred last night. Winds are current 40 mph, and the system will be interacting with Hispaniola today. It will weaken to a tropical depression, but it should survive. The latest forecast from NHC has the system moving into the Southeast Gulf of Mexico Saturday, then moving to near Apalachicola late Sunday night as a tropical storm.

Some notes on Fred this morning.

*For now NHC is keeping the system under hurricane strength through the time of landfall. An upper-level low and trough near Florida in 2-3 days could impart increasing west-southwesterly shear and limit intensification.

*Remember, the main impact (in terms of wind, rain, storm surge, isolated tornadoes) will be along and east of the circulation center. The current forecast keeps the Alabama Gulf Coast, and the western part of the Florida Panhandle (Gulf Shores, Pensacola, Navarre Beach, Destin) on the “good”, west, offshore flow side.

*However, remember 4 and 5 day NHC track forecasts have average errors of 175 and 200 miles, respectively. Meaning, of course, the forecast of the track and intensity could easily change in coming days.

*There is a risk of wind and rainfall impacts in Florida beginning Friday in the Keys and spreading northward through portions of the Peninsula Saturday, and the Panhandle late Sunday and Sunday night. However, it is too soon to determine the exact timing, location, and magnitude of any potential impacts.

*If you have a beach trip planned for this weekend and early next week, monitor Fred’s progress and check updates to the forecast. I would not make any changes to your plans now, but be ready to do that by Friday if needed.

Elsewhere in the tropics, a tropical wave located a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic is producing showers and thunderstorms just to the west of its axis. Some gradual development is possible over the next several days while the system moves generally westward across the tropical Atlantic at near 20 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: An F2 tornado touched down in the metropolitan area of Salt Lake City. The tornado lasted ten minutes and killed one person, injured more than 80 people, and caused more than $170 million in damages. It was the most destructive tornado in Utah’s history and awakened the entire state’s population to the fact that the Beehive State does experience tornadoes.

ROUTINE SUMMER WEATHER CONTINUES: Alabama’s weather won’t change much through Sunday… we expect a mix of sun and clouds each day with the usual round of daily scattered showers and thunderstorms, most active between 12:00 noon and 10:00 p.m. The chance of any one specific spot getting wet each day is 40-50 percent; the high today will be in the low 90s, close to 90 tomorrow, and in the upper 80s Sunday. Pretty much what you expect in mid-August around here.

NEXT WEEK: Fred, which should be a broad tropical low, will bring deeper tropical moisture into the state next week. While the heaviest rain will most likely be east of Alabama, we do expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis with highs mostly in the mid to upper 80s, which is about 5 degrees below average for this time of the year. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FRED: Tropical Depression Fred remains very disorganized this morning, on the northern coast of Cuba. The system will pass over the Florida Keys tomorrow as a minimal tropical storm, and then through the far eastern Gulf of Mexico Sunday. It moves into the eastern Florida panhandle Sunday night, most likely well under hurricane strength.

Some notes on Fred this morning…

*Confidence is high Fred won’t become a hurricane in the Gulf due to interaction with the Florida peninsula and shear. The main impact will be rip currents and lots of rain.

*As you look on the NHC forecast map, remember, this most likely will be a broad tropical low, and not a dot on a map. The heaviest rain from Fred will be along and east of the circulation center.

*Inland, the heaviest rain as a direct result of Fred will be over the Florida peninsula, Georgia, and the Carolinas. But, the system will pull deeper tropical moisture into Alabama next week, and we will see an increase in the number of showers and storms.

*There will be a high danger of rip currents along the entire central Gulf Coast (Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach) Sunday and Monday. Expect double red flags in many areas.

*A few isolated tornadoes will be possible across the Florida peninsula Sunday, on the east side of Fred.

*This forecast CAN still change; keep an eye on updates. When it comes to tropical systems, if you are working with old information, you are working with bad information.

INVEST 95L: A small low pressure system located about 1000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity primarily west of the center. Environmental conditions are expected to gradually become more conducive for additional development, and a tropical depression is likely to form within the next couple of days. The system is forecast to move generally westward at about 20 mph across the tropical Atlantic, reaching portions of the Leeward Islands Saturday night, and Virgin Islands on Sunday.

There is a 70 percent chance this becomes a tropical depression or storm within 48 hours, and the name will be Grace. Too early to know if this will impact the Gulf of Mexico or the U.S. We do note most models bring this up to hurricane strength in a few days.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Hurricane Charley made landfall on the southwest coast of Florida near Cayo Costa, just west of Ft. Myers around 3:45 p.m. EDT with maximum sustained surface winds near 150 mph.Charley was initially expected to hit further north in Tampa, and caught many Floridians off-guard due to a sudden change in the storm’s track as it approached the state. Along its path, Charley caused 10 deaths and $16.9 billion in damage to insured residential property, making it the second costliest hurricane in United States history at the time. Charley was a compact, fast-moving storm, which limited the scope and severity of the damage

    What are you using?

EDIT: disregard, I see you're using Celsius WG.

I use Target 6.6 and it seems to work. If anyone in the HSV area needs some, I know a guy...

The Celsius seems to be working. After two weeks the targets seem to be yellowing and they aren't growing as fast as they used to. We'll see. I heard the target works very well
