I havent really looked it over yet but was hoping to do the rebuild myself and gain some knowledge and learn a new skill in the process.

    Yeah.
Hell yeah brother. I thought the same thing, but my donor engine had sat for 10 years and would not budge. It was pretty ugly inside, and I was worried about the money pit it might become. Plus, I would have spent at least $500 on parts and other labor, so $750 was a good deal.

See if you can find an old Haynes manual on eBay. Look for the oldest edition you can find -- later editions they start consolidating models and have less detail. I have an original Haynes for the '77 Celica the 20R went into, plus a later version that consolidated more year models. Original one is much more complete.

RockAuto has a Premium rebuild kit including freakin' pistons for $140. What a deal! But, you have to know measurements to know how much to undersize bearings and oversize pistons and rings, so have to get things apart and machined up before ordering. That's a project I wouldn't mind having.

I had a '92 regular cab with the same engine. I did the timing chain/gears/guides and clutch at 130K miles. They are solid motors, but the timing chain guides are plastic and break apart, and then the chain slaps around. That may be all it really needs, depending on mileage. Mine were almost worn through, but probably would have lasted until 150K. Bottom end may be just fine.

I can hope lol. I have seen some aftermarket timing chain guides that were metal with the plastic on top where the chain sits.

Man that would be cool. That was about the best thing about the gen2 Frontiers and Xterras, they shared platforms with the Titan. They can swap in UCA/LCA's from the Titan for a sweet budget mid-travel IFS set up.

That would have been 100% my plan if I replaced my old Frontier with a newer Frontier instead of a Taco. I know the newer ones of way more reliable than the earlier gen2's (I had a '05 Nismo), man I miss that torque of the VQ40 for sure.

Mines a 2017 Pro4x 6mt, and boy howdy does it scoot. Haven't had it off road yet so I don't have that comparison to make with the Taco, but we'll get there.

Check out LC Engineering. They have some sweet parts for those engines. I used their emissions block-off kit, timing set/ cover and heater hose relocation. After it was all in I only had 2 vacuum lines, one for the distributor advance and the other for the brake booster. I also bought a cheap rebuild kit and had zero issues with it. I just got the stock spec bearings and pistons. I used a ball hone on the cylinders. The only thing that I had to outsource was the head machining. That was a great running engine... I miss that truck.

    Yeah.
Yeah, I love their stuff. I used those same block-off kits (but for the 20R), and also got a Cannon intake manifold from them. Did the Pertronix ignition upgrade and added an MSD kit (I had points, so no longer have to mess with gap and dwell, although I have a dwell meter if anyone knows what that is or needs one). It's no speed demon, but it runs well. Maybe someday do headers and cat delete.

I remember one that hit on a Sunday evening. I was on a work conference call with other people that live in the area. We all stopped and had to ask if we all heard the same boom. Yep.. We did.

    Random, but wanted to interject.

Q3 2023, as a 2024 model. For some reason, so far it is unaffected by the delays which pushed back the next 4Runner from late 2022 to early 2024. To be honest, Toyota is not as good at keeping to set launch timetables in this area and will delay launch if necessary, as seen with the next Tundra that has seen 3 internal delays since 2007.

First redesign was cancelled over disappointing sales/economy in late 2000s and turned into a heavy MMC for 2014. The approved redesign, debuts next month and launches in January and surprisingly, the 2023 Sequoia the following month as an early arrival.

Until engineering sign-off is completed and all phases of trial production and pilot production are satisfactory, there is always the chance you are bound to see at least minor delays in terms of weeks or months.

Major delays like in the case of the next 4Runner, are more rare. At worst, the next Tacoma launches around March 2024 like the 1995.5 Tacoma (Tacoma was originally due in late 1994). We'll see how that pans out.

I was under the impression that the Sequoia was being discontinued with the launch of the new Tundra
