Almost done deadening!

Still got a few things left in the truck but ive just finished putting my 5th(?) box of dynamat extreme and 2 boxes of dynapad in. the roof has a layer of dynamat and the headliner got a layer of trunkliner on the opposite side, eliminating all rattles coming from the dome light and upper console. the entire floor and rear wall got double layered with dynamat. today i put on most of the layer of dynapad that the floor will get. still have another box of dynapad and a fair amount of scraps to fill in what areas are left and use for other parts. the doors have about 10-15lbs of dynamat each. inner skin, outer skin, and the inside of the door panel, itself accompanied with a layer of trunkliner. dynapad is going in the doors, as well. even with the truck apart like this, road noise is GREATLY reduced. theres still a couple rattles / vibrations that i have to pinpoint and eliminate in the doors.

also looking for methods to attack the wind noise that comes from the side view mirrors. was thinking of some dynamat and silicone?

i have 2 basic goals for this new system build.
1. keep both rear seats.
2. have a LOUD-ASS, CLEAR sounding system with minimal interferences (vibrations, rattles, road noise.)

in the next few weeks i will be ordering/installing:

four capacitors
JL XD 600/6 for the front channels
JL XD 200/2 for the rear channels
Alpine PDX M12 for the bass
Audison Bit One
Hertz Hi-Energy XL mids (front)
Hertz Mille 280s tweets (front)
Hertz Hi-Energy Coaxials (rear)
two JL 10W6 woofers
Kenwood DNX9960 (maybe)

cant wait till its done. I'll post as many pics as I can, I dont usually keep a camera around when im working on my own stuff but i'll do my best. keep an eye on the for sale threads, im gonna have some good stuff up for grabs unless i end up putting my old system in my dads truck.

 

Nice work thus far. Double cab or access cab? Those W6's will be a tight fit back there. Not saying it's impossible but your work will be cutout for you that's for sure.

Tell me about how you plan on wiring up in terms of channel usage. You've got 6 channels for the fronts and only 4 drivers. I'm assuming you're running them active and bridging two sets of channels for the midbass drivers?

 

yeah, the biggest dilemma ive had with planning this build is the woofers. i need 2 to get the sound i want but i have friends in the rear seats alot. i have a design in mind that should work out nicely.

that is exactly how i plan on running my front drivers. that setup paired with the Audison Bit One will help cope with the shitty imaging. If i decide to use the factory speaker/tweeter mount, that is. The depending factor on that should be resolved this week.

have you found the rattle in the door handle cables? If you figure something out let me know

hmmm, after i finished layering all the parts in the doors that i did, there arent any rattles anymore. the only noise i'm still getting is a vibration from between the weather stripping for the window and the plastic of the door panel.

Good luck with the W6's. I didn't want to mess with the extra work needed to get them to fit so I sold mine...I'm curious to see how you plan on doing it. (I went with the IDQ10 instead).

What do you have in your Taco right now (that you are using to find the rattles)?

 

I started a thread to follow my build for the W6 enclosures. The subs aren't actually too big, so fitting them isn't going to be too much of an issue for me. Now I'm just contemplating whether or not to do three instead of two. The thread has some of my potential designs.

As for the existing bass end of my system, now I have a single Alpine Type R 10" in a custom ported, downfired enclosure that I designed and built. I'm running it at about 800 watts instead of the "recommended" 500. It puts out 135db at its resident frequency of 33hz so its pretty loud but I am looking for a tighter sounding, slightly louder bass setup. For the front end I have a pair of Hertz High Energy speakers powered by the Hertz EP4. I haven't had rear speakers since I installed the High Energy's and they have not been missed. Current head unit is a Pioneer AVIC-D3 with bluetooth.

The existing system sounds awesome, the bass is very punchy, especially for a ported enclosure and it is loud as hell. If I didn't have the resources that I do, I wouldn't change a thing about the current setup, but what I plan on doing with the new build will definitely be an improvement.

The truck isn't put entirely back together since my newly cleaned floorliner is still hanging up at the shop, but I finished the DynaPad today and put the stereo components back in because I just HAD to hear it with the floor deadened. Not to mention, I've been driving around with NO STEREO AT ALL for the last week and a half. There's a highly noticeable improvement in sound. The bass sounds more punchy and controlled, mid-bass is also very well defined.

Oops, I missed that you had an access cab. lol You mentioned that you wanted to keep the rear seats and my mind automatically though of what I have...a DC.

The W6 is great sub...I was bummed when I sold mine but I am excited to go back to a ported enclosure again (The 10W6 was in a sealed box in my coupe's super tiny trunk). But right now, Mr. Marv is just about finished building my box for the IDQ10 which will be tuned for 30Hz...so I am going the opposite way and looking for lower (and not as tight) bass. I wanted to go that route because my 9" woofers from my last setup will be used again and they filled in my low-but-tighter bass needs very well.

After all of the sound deadening, the wind noise coming from the A pillar area seems to be the last area producing a lot of unwanted noise. Have you tried to tackle that area yet?

Please don't waiste your money like that. If anything get a batcap or kinetics battery to handle the extra demand of your audio.

 

Hold the phone.....did I miss that in the first post? I agree, what are you getting capacitors for? Just get the bigger alternator that Toyota offers from the factory or after market.

In all seriousness tho, he is right (bigger alt over caps). But more importantly, I don't think it's needed. I will be running something similar but without the caps and I have no doubt that I will be fine. You are using all class D amps that are incredibly efficient (over 80% efficient) as opposed to the A/B amps of old.

Try it out without the caps first and you'll find that you don't need them and you can use that money elsewhere...

 

Yeah, really you should be fine with that load. And I'm pretty sure that you got the higher alternator in your truck already looking at that picture in your post. You have the outlet in the bed of the truck right? Isn't that the power inverter I spy under the armrest area?

 

Yeah, that's the power inverter there, but I wasn't aware that meant I had a better alternator (?).

As for the capacitors, I get them for so damn cheap, it would be stupid NOT to have them, haha. I plan on running one on each of my door speaker amplifiers and two on my bass amp. I also plan on putting in different batteries. Basically, I'm going to have everything setup so the stereo puts out full volume without even popping a queef.

I plan on addressing the wind noise that sounds like it comes from the mirrors once I go to install my new door speakers.

 

I'm pretty sure the Alt is part of that package. Or at least it was when I bought my truck in 2009 I think. Maybe confirm with your local dealer or something? Just ask if they can look at it and tell which one it is and the rated output?

 

i wont set foot in my local dealer, they are the WORST. "fixed" the leak i was having with my differential when the truck was still under warranty by attempting to mend the broken gasket with a little bit of silicone. when their makeshit seal broke and i brought it back to them, the truck was out of warranty and they refused to own up to their shitty workmanship and wanted a fortune to "fix" it again.

although, i suppose it cant be that hard for them to give me a little information. maybe i'll give them a call, tomorrow.

 

FINALLY got all my wiring routed, truck put back together and cleaned this weekend. with everything put back together, there is MINIMAL road noise. The stereo sounds great at the moment, cant wait to start putting in the new system.

While in the process of sorting out my wiring behind the deck, I painted the metra dash kit and bezel for the climate controls black. It turned out pretty good, except I think I will re-do the Hazard button.


Here's the truck as it sits, now.


The exterior mods waiting to be done are retro projector, painted headlights, DRL mod, HID fog lights, satoshi grille, tail lights, silver-painted rear bumper, and factory hood w/ scoop.

 

The noise from the side mirror is way worse with that small triangle piece removed. Adding it back cuts the noise in half. Its not noise from the mirror per say... I put closed cell foam between the mirror and truck and its still loud. Its coming from the trim at the corner of the windshield and the plastic piece that is slightly under the corner of your hood. Tweaking that afecgts sound a lot. I am not sure how to seal it up without stopping water from draining. I am also contemplating doing foam and MLV inside that traingle piece to see how well that helps block noise.

On your dash... I painted the entire large piece your two small trim pieces clip into. I left the trim around the air vents silver. Looks better that way IMO. Might want to consider it.

Id also drive a hood with scoop before committing... they throw up some aweful glare at certain times of the day.
