PTO driven or any screw type splitter?
Why do you say this? I saw them on the interwebs and thought they looked really cool? I have 0 experience with them though so I'm curious?

That's a good question. Wood is not my primary heat source but I hope to use the fireplace through the winter months as much as possible. I just built this house and have only been living in it since spring time so I'm not really sure how much wood I'll go through each year. I can't imagine it will be too much as the house is well insulated and not all that big to begin with.

 

If you go PTO your tractor is tied to it and you have to unhook it if you need to use the tractor for something else. If you go self contained portable unit you can leave it sitting and cover it up if need be at the wood pile. Just something to think about.

I mean, a regular linear log splitter is pretty dangerous. Stickman gets mutilated in all sorts of ways in the stickers on those.
Is there something inherently more dangerous about a screw type?

I guess they look potentially less dangerous to me, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

 

Do a search on Bing for "screw type wood splitter dangers" lots of info, the biggest thing is they never stop turning and they can grab clothing, gloves, etc. and it's too late. My brother had one, split 3 pieces of wood with it and sold it.

All wood splitters are dangerous, you have to pay attention at all times

I have a large scar on my upper lip from a piece of wood jumping up out of a wood splitter.

 

I’ve split hundreds of cord of wood with a regular piston/wedge style splitter, I've never used the screw or inertia type splitters, but I feel the piston type is the safest type because they are typically slower than death.

 

I live life dangerously already in a covid world.

I decided to get a stand alone splitter, with a honda motor FTW, waiting on money to grow on tree so I can harvest cash and cut tree down for firewood .

 

I picked up a 24t country line from TSC 2 years ago. It’s performed flawless with everything I’ve throw at it. It’s split close to 20 cords between myself and 2 friends. paid $1100 at the time. Not sure they still are on sale for $999 at this time of covid.
nice to trailer to the pile, leave it and use the tractor for other tasks.

 

I have to say, I really disagree with the above.

The more use I can get it that hi dollar machine, the more value it has.

 

What motor is on that one?

 

I say… let the diesel run! They like it running!! But if it were me.. id buy a stand alone unit… at least a 25ton unit…. Tow it, leave it and use it….. or like brother joe and I, tow it,use it, store it… we use a 27ton unit and other than being slow … which is ok in my book… we never had any issues with it and we can split 1 cord on 1 tank or is it 1 case of beer on one tank
