    Hello, i have a 2012 tacoma prerunner. i was working on some wiring in my switch housing (left of the steering wheel) when i noticed that i had some extra wiring. it’s in the same spot where the rear diff lock would normally be. now i’m curious to see if i can get a switch that i would be able to connect to it and have rear diff lock. has anyone tried this and/or heard of someone trying this as it would be a great feature to add onto my truck. if any questions reach out. thanks.

    Its not that simple unfortunately, you would have to install a rear axle with a locker as well as the 4wd ECU that controls it and most likely the wiring for the rear axle isn't there.

    TRD Offroad models are the only ones that come with a factory locker.

    I will go ahead a say, it’s probably not worth it.
    If I were going to add a Locker, it probably wouldn’t be the factory 8”.

    But, I believe 12VoltGuy has a stand-alone system that works with the factory e-locker. http://12voltguy.net/product/e-locker-full-kit-switch-cable/

    Im not sure if you’ll need to change the drive shaft yoke?
    They may or may not be the same?
    @6 gearT444E would probably know?

    Here's how the switch lay out looks on my Prerunner (see attached photo). If you're talking about the switch circled in red with the bid F, the answer is no. I forget what the OE wiring is for, but apparently it was nothng that pertained to at least my truck. I disconnected what was there and made use of that slot for an auxillary cooling fan for my radiator.

    On mine it's to turn off the roll sensing airbags for offroading, the middle is clutch start cancel (MT) or Downhill Assist Control (AT), and the left is the traction control button.

    Driveshaft wouldn't have to be modified. I'd recommend just building your own harness, but I don't know where that plug goes to for trucks that don't have a factory 4x4 ECU. At that point it would hardly be worth tracing the wires out since you'd be designing the system from scratch. If it were me and wanted to retrofit the locker into a non locker truck, use that OEM harness, take the switched hot on the load side of the switch and use it to power a DPDT relay. You'll need 7 conductors to run back to the actuator, to make things easy just buy a 20' spool of 7 conductor trailer wire of multi conductor cable of your choosing.

    I think the OP was thinking they could just stick a switch in there and have a locker, unfortunately it's not that simple.

    Oh, yeah so I only read the post I was tagged in, oops :oops:. Yeah plugging the diff lock switch into the diff lock switch location on a non-TRD offroad truck does not magically make a locker appear at the axle unfortunately.
