Hi, I recently bought a 2010 Tacoma, 4 cylinder automatic with 40K miles on it. I noticed when I test drove it from the dealer that it had a wine at about 53 mph and coasting. The dealer diagnosed it as the differential carrier and replaced it under warranty. As I was driving it home I could hear the noise again, but now at 58 mph. Is this a common problem and any thoughts on what I should do about it? I called the dealer's service manager, but he hasn't returned my call yet.
    Thanks, Smitty

When you say differential carrier are you refering to the driveshaft carrier bearing or the bearings in the differential?
Very unusual for either to go bad at 40k miles.

Dm93, Not a driveshaft carrier bearing, but the gear assembly in the differential. I agree that this seems unusual for 40K. Even more so that a new one would also make a noise. I'd think it was just me being crazy, but two different mechanics at the dealer also heard it.

Yes. It's a regular cab. So maybe it's the driveshaft slip joint and not the differential?

Carrier bearing would be another possibility, since you have warranty I'd keep on them till they fix it right.

whatstcp, Thanks! It's still under warranty so I'll let them know about this. I want it to be right, but how big a deal is this noise? is it a real mechanical concern or just an annoying noise?

Oh ok I wasn't sure I've never looked under one, all I ever see is access and double cabs in my area mostly.

I work at a shop but we just don't see alot of Toyota Trucks even though I see quite a few on the road so I don't get much experience working on them.
