Axle wrap/rear thump

Hello! I noticed a thump from the rear end of my 2002 4x4 taco when letting off the brake at stop lights etc. after reading a lot of info I replaced the leaf springs, just the stock height .. also replaced the rear shocks since I was there and have added Firestone airbags when I haul my wife and Is motorcycles. I replaced drums and shoes and hardware in rear brakes. I’ve greased the driveline as well. After all of that I still have the thump! What else could I be missing. Thanks guys any info would help!

 

So I had the same problem even after I replaced my leaf pack too. I just greased the slip yoke with this stuff. Genuine Ford Fluid XG-8 PTFE Lubricant - 3 oz.

Apparently this is the only stuff that really works since it was made specifically for slip yokes from what I’ve read. It totally got rid that clunk whenever I stop.

 

At what stage of the leaf spring install did you torque your (hopefully new) ubolts, and how tight did you torque them?

I’ve only ever used Lucas red n tacky on my entire driveline and had zero issues. Never needed a special grease for the slip yoke.

 

I got the bolts snug maybe 3/4 to torque spec lowered the truck drove around the block and then torqued them. And have checked torque twice since.

I’ll look into greasing the yolk a bit more. Thank you. Did you grease it through the yolk zerk fitting or remove the driveline and take it apart to grease it?

 

Hopefully you didn’t bind the shackles in an undesired spot if you tightened them 75% while still off the ground. I went with just a bit over hand tight on all fasteners, and only started to actually torque them after the truck was back on the ground and they had flexed to natural rest. If you don’t find any definitive cause soon, might want to loosen the fasteners while it’s on the ground and then re-torque to spec.

Essentially, suspension fasteners should only be torqued when the vehicle is at normal ride height, not while still off the ground.

I only use the zirc fittings when greasing.

 

Copy that. I’ll give it a check and re torque and grease it up and see how it does. Thank you
